description: "KLA (KLAC.US) posted a death cross in its daily Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) on Oct 15 as DIF crossed below DEA and both lines fell under the zero line, on a day when the stock closed lower for a ninth session in a row on turnover of about USD 2.37 billion. Applied Materials' Oct 13 investor day offered no revenue outlook and peers at SEMICON West avoided near-term spending targets, while Lam Research is nine sessions down ahead of its Oct 21 report and KLA's own fiscal 2027 first-quarter results land on Oct 28. KLA trades below its 5- to 30-day moving averages and oscillators are deeply oversold, with the 6-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) near 16.8 and the Commodity Channel Index (CCI) around -187, even as turnover stays well above early-October levels. The near-term bias is bearish; the tests to watch are whether the stock can reclaim its 5-day average and whether guidance from Lam Research or KLA arrives with volume behind it."

# Technicals | KLA (KLAC.US): MACD Death Cross Confirms a Nine-Session Slide

KLA (KLAC.US) printed a death cross in its daily Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) on Oct 15, and the near-term bias is bearish. DIF crossed below DEA, and both lines sit under the zero line, so the bullish momentum built earlier is fading. The stock has now closed lower for nine sessions in a row, the longest such run since January 2008, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Turnover was about USD 2.37 billion. KLA is the leading maker of semiconductor process control and yield management equipment, and it now trades below its 5-, 10-, 20- and 30-day moving averages. The short-term averages have rolled into bearish alignment.

The recent pressure has come from the equipment group rather than from anything specific to KLA. Applied Materials (AMAT.US) held an investor day on Oct 13 and set out profit and market-share targets only, giving no revenue outlook. Its shares fell more than 6% that day and dragged the sector down with them. Peers at SEMICON West largely avoided near-term spending targets, and debate has grown over whether AI infrastructure spending can hold up at current valuations (TradingKey, Oct 14). Lam Research (LRCX.US) is nine sessions into its own decline, the longest since 1984, and reports on Oct 21 — the group's next checkpoint (Benzinga, Oct 15).

The next company-specific test comes on Oct 28, when KLA reports fiscal 2027 first-quarter results after the US close. The Oct 1 announcement set the date, and prior guidance put revenue at about USD 4 billion, plus or minus USD 200 million. Institutional positioning is split. First Citizens Bank raised its stake by 234.9% in the third quarter, and Baillie Gifford listed the stock as a new position in its latest investor letter. Other institutions trimmed their holdings and management sold shares, while Morgan Stanley cut its target price on Oct 6 but kept a Buy rating.

The chart is stretched to the downside. KLA trades near the lower Bollinger Band, and the band is widening again, a sign the range has expanded after a quiet stretch. Oscillators are oversold almost across the board: the 6-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits near 16.8 and the KDJ oscillator's K line has dropped below 20. The Commodity Channel Index (CCI) is around -187, and BIAS and BR readings are also deeply oversold. Readings that deep often mean short-term selling pressure has largely been spent, which leaves room for a technical bounce. Oversold on its own is not a floor signal, though. Turnover eased slightly from the prior session yet remains well above early-October levels, so the willingness to exit has not faded. Semiconductor names were broadly under pressure in pre-market trading on Oct 16 as well (Longbridge financial news).

The near-term bias is bearish, since the death cross and the bearish alignment of the short-term averages both cap upside. Sector sentiment and a cautious macro backdrop add to the drag. Order visibility and existing guidance have not materially deteriorated, and some institutions are still buying against the trend. What to watch: whether KLA can reclaim its 5-day moving average and hold there, and what Lam Research's Oct 21 results and KLA's Oct 28 earnings say about demand. Better-than-expected guidance backed by heavier turnover would put the weak setup in doubt. A sector that keeps sliding on elevated turnover would keep the cross in force. For now, the burden of proof sits with the bulls.
