# Musk Warns of Neocloud Industry Shakeout: What Risks Do CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN Face?

TradingKey - On October 25 local time, Elon Musk stated that debt markets are tightening financing for companies that lack revenue sources outside of AI data centers, predicting widespread consolidation and corporate bankruptcies in the emerging AI cloud provider (Neocloud) sector. This assessment shifts market focus from the growth in demand for computing power to the capital and return on investment supporting this expansion.

As of October 25, CoreWeave (CRWV), Nebius (NBIS), and IREN (IREN) have fallen by approximately 34%, 28%, and 30%, respectively, over the past two weeks. Investors worry that even if orders continue to grow, pressures in financing and delivery could erode the returns ultimately realized by shareholders.

Morgan Stanley also noted in its latest research report that rising borrowing costs are unlikely to derail AI buildouts, but they will determine who gets funded and under what terms. This implies that growing industry demand and financing difficulties for certain companies may coexist.

## Neocloud Faces Triple Pressures: Tightening Financing, Delivery Delays and Falling Equipment Returns

Neoclouds primarily provide AI-oriented cloud computing services, requiring upfront procurement of GPUs and the construction or leasing of data centers before gradually recovering their investments through compute revenue. The more orders they receive, the larger their upfront capital requirements tend to be, while revenue and cash collections must wait until capacity is delivered.

When operating cash flow is insufficient to cover expansion investments, companies need to supplement capital through borrowings, customer prepayments, or equity financing. Tightening lending conditions can slow down construction, rising interest expenses will erode profits, and issuing additional shares may dilute existing shareholders' equity. Therefore, financing capabilities directly determine how many orders a company can take on and how much profit those orders will ultimately generate.

Morgan Stanley believes that rising borrowing costs are unlikely to derail AI infrastructure buildouts, but will alter capital flows and financing methods. High-rated, large cloud providers have diversified businesses and greater financial flexibility, initially bearing increased interest expenses; lower-rated companies, however, may simultaneously face rising borrowing costs and narrowing financing channels.

This divergence is also reflected in financing structures. The bank observed that recent price declines were concentrated in unsecured debt from lower-quality AI issuers, whereas loans collateralized by chips or high-quality customer lease payments experienced relatively mild volatility. Consequently, some Neoclouds may become more dependent on equipment collateral, customer contracts, and support from creditworthy counterparties.

After securing funding, companies must also deploy power, data center facilities, and equipment on schedule. Any delay in the process can postpone revenue and cash collections, while prolonging capital tie-ups and increasing financing costs. Customer prepayments can ease pressure during the construction period, but companies must still complete the corresponding deliveries to generate ongoing service revenue.

Returns after capacity comes online depend on equipment utilization rates, compute rental prices, and economic lifespans. If equipment sits idle, lease rates decline, or competitiveness wanes more quickly, the time required for companies to recover their investments will be extended. As higher financing costs and slower cash returns compound, long-term earnings expectations and valuations may be revised downward even if short-term revenue continues to grow.

## CoreWeave Faces Interest Pressure as Nebius and IREN Need to Turn Investments Into Revenue

Comparing the data for April to June 2026 reveals different risk priorities among the three companies. CoreWeave and Nebius correspond to the second quarter of 2026, while IREN corresponds to the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026.

****Accounts receivable collections and deferred revenue growth together contributed $2.384 billion in cash flow****

****Deferred revenue growth contributed $1.722 billion, representing approximately 95% of operating cash flow****

Key Risks

****Ongoing Financing Needs and Interest Burden****

****Heavy expansion spending; cash flow is impacted by the timing of collections and advance payments****

****Advance collections support construction, with heavier subsequent delivery obligations****

CoreWeave's pressure stems primarily from debt costs. In the second quarter, the company's operating cash flow covered only 10.6% of asset purchases such as equipment, while net interest expense reached $640 million. An order backlog of approximately $104 billion at the end of June provides a demand foundation, but fulfilling these orders still requires continuous investment, and interest expense has become a major burden on profitability.

In light of Morgan Stanley's assessment of the financing structure, whether CoreWeave can secure project loans based on equipment and customer contracts will dictate its subsequent expansion. Rising financing costs will reduce profits contributed by orders, while tighter drawdown conditions could further delay revenue by slowing construction.

Nebius has a cash cushion, but its construction capital expenditure still significantly outpaces operating cash collections. As of the end of June, the company held approximately $8.042 billion in cash and cash equivalents, with asset purchases exceeding operating cash flow by about $3.411 billion for the quarter.

Meanwhile, its operating cash flow benefited significantly from accounts receivable collections and increases in deferred revenue. This indicates that customer payments provided support for construction, but quarterly cash flow did not derive entirely from cash generated by providing ongoing computing power services. As expansion progresses, new capacity needs to contribute to revenue in a timely manner, and customer collections must keep pace with construction outlays; otherwise, the company will continue to consume cash reserves and increase subsequent financing requirements.

IREN's focus is on completing deliveries and advancing the transformation of its revenue structure. Operating cash flow for the quarter nearly covered asset purchases such as equipment, driven primarily by an increase in deferred revenue. Funds received from customers in advance alleviated current financing pressures, but also mean the company must deploy resources to fulfill subsequent service obligations.

During the same period, IREN's AI cloud revenue rose to $70.5 million, but declining mining revenue still caused overall group revenue to fall quarter-over-quarter. While the AI business is growing, it has not yet fully offset the impact of the contraction in the legacy business. Delivering computing power on schedule and scaling AI revenue are critical not only to fulfilling the services corresponding to customer prepayments, but also to whether the company can reignite overall revenue growth.
