Sam Altman Makes Surprise South Korea Visit as OpenAI Builds Chip Partnerships

According to CNBC, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made an unannounced visit to South Korea over the weekend, meeting with about 50 executives from Samsung affiliates in Yongin to discuss AI developments and potential business opportunities. South Korean media reported that Altman also had lunch with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, with senior executives from SK Hynix and SK Telecom attending; SK Hynix said it could not confirm the meeting. Altman’s visit builds on partnerships announced in October 2025 with Samsung and SK Group through OpenAI’s Stargate initiative, which includes plans to expand advanced memory chip production and explore AI data center development in South Korea.
