I'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.Elon Musk challenged OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s argument that scarce memory belongs in cloud data centers rather than personal computers, turning a dispute over chip supplies into a broader debate over who should control computing power.
Altman Argues Cloud Servers Use RAM Better
"The people deserve to have their RAM too!" Musk declared in a Sunday post on X, sharing a meme showing an interrogator asking, "You are withholding DRAM from the cloud, are you not?" His response highlights the growing tension between cloud-based AI infrastructure and consumers who want powerful personal computers.

Altman made his case during an October 29 episode of Stripe co-founder John Collison’s ‘Cheeky Pint’ podcast, challenging the idea that open-source AI models running on personal computers could reduce reliance on data centers. He called it "quite terrible" that people keep scarce DRAM in their computers, estimating that they use that memory only "5% of the time." Altman framed the figure as part of a resource-allocation argument but cited no supporting data in the interview.
"You want maximum utilization in the cloud," Altman added, arguing centralized data centers could use scarce memory more efficiently. OpenAI’s Stargate partnerships with Samsung Electronics (OTC:SSNLF) and SK Hynix Inc. (NASDAQ:SKHY), announced in October 2025, aim to expand advanced-memory production toward 900,000 DRAM wafer starts monthly, according to the company. The agreements show the scale of AI developers’ demand for limited memory.

AI Memory Shortage Hits Consumer Computers
Consumers are already feeling the pressure. Research firm TrendForce projected conventional DRAM contract prices would rise 10% to 15% in the fourth quarter of 2026 and warned that chipmakers’ shift toward servers could squeeze PC memory supplies further in 2027.
Higher memory prices have already pushed up the cost of PC components. Reuters reported last week that Samsung had sold out its high-bandwidth memory for 2027, while SK Hynix said its DRAM and high-bandwidth memory output was sold out through 2029.
Musk’s Own Data Centers Need Memory
Musk also competes for those chips. His SpaceX AI operation runs the giant Colossus computing facilities, and he said in September that Colossus 2 already used 550,000 Nvidia GB200 and GB300 processors, with plans to add more.
Musk has also criticized some memory suppliers for what he called "extortionate" future pricing and warned China could expand RAM production by 2028.
