# Cybertruck's Days Are Numbered. Here's What Tesla Has Planned.

**Tesla** (TSLA +4.13%) CEO Elon Musk has never been shy about making bold predictions. But sometimes, even his most ambitious ideas don't work out quite as planned.

That appears to be the case with the Cybertruck, Tesla's futuristic electric pickup that first went on sale in 2023. Musk announced Friday that the company will wind down production at its Texas Gigafactory around mid-2027.

It's an admission that the Cybertruck hasn't lived up to expectations. But for Tesla stock, the more interesting story is the Cybercab, which is what Musk intends to build in its place.

## The Cybertruck never found its audience

Musk unveiled the Cybertruck and its radically different, futuristic design in 2019. At the time, he envisioned a powerful electric vehicle that could compete with traditional pickups. He eventually projected annual sales of 250,000 vehicles.

That hasn't come close to happening.

Tesla sold just 20,237 Cybertrucks in the United States in 2025, according to Kelley Blue Book, a 48% drop from 2024. The vehicle's unconventional styling, high price, and repeated recalls haven't helped its appeal. And the Cybertruck's struggles have continued into 2026, with sales through September falling another 28% from the comparable period last year.

Tesla hasn't officially announced that the Cybertruck will disappear entirely. Musk said production at the Austin factory would wind down, but didn't clarify whether manufacturing would move elsewhere. Given that Austin is the only known Tesla facility equipped to produce the vehicle's specialized components, however, its future looks increasingly doubtful.

## Musk has bigger plans for the factory

The Cybertruck's departure would make room for something Musk believes has considerably greater potential – the two-seat Cybercab, its EV designed specifically for autonomous transportation.

The Cybercab, which has butterfly doors and lacks a steering wheel and traditional pedals, is central to Musk's ambition to build a large-scale robotaxi network. Tesla has already begun deploying them in Austin and plans to expand operations in Dallas this month. Turning it into a meaningful commercial business will require additional vehicles, regulatory approvals, and evidence that the technology can operate safely at scale.

There's an important distinction here. The Cybertruck was an unconventional attempt to compete in an established automotive market. The Cybercab represents a bet on an entirely different transportation business. And Musk is increasingly directing Tesla's resources toward that opportunity, as well as toward the company's Optimus humanoid robots.

But investors shouldn't confuse an ambitious business plan with an established source of profits.

## What does this mean for Tesla stock?

Tesla's latest financial results illustrate why that distinction matters.

In the third quarter, Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles, down 2% year over year. Revenue was approximately $28 billion, essentially unchanged from the prior year, while operating income fell 56%. The company generated $1.53 billion in free cash flow, largely due to its decision to reduce capex.

Eliminating an underperforming vehicle could help Tesla redirect manufacturing capacity and investment toward higher-potential businesses. That's a reasonable strategy, particularly when the Cybertruck's sales are so far below initial expectations.

But the Cybercab has plenty to prove. Tesla must demonstrate that customers want its autonomous transportation services, that regulators will permit widespread deployment, and that the economics can support a profitable business.

The Cybertruck's disappointing performance doesn't necessarily mean the Cybercab will suffer the same fate. But it does demonstrate that even Musk's most ambitious predictions don't always translate into commercial success.

For investors paying a premium for Tesla's autonomous future, that's a distinction worth remembering.
