# Heads or Tails for the Fed? Friday's NFP Casts the First Vote

The Fed's September 15–16 decision is, right now, a coin flip: the market puts the odds of another hike at roughly 50/50. On **Friday, September 4**, one number gets to nudge that coin — the August non-farm payrolls report (NFP).

This post is a three-minute read on that one number:

- **The clue we already have** — Wednesday's soft ADP print, and what it does and doesn't tell us.
- **ADP vs NFP** — why only one of them actually moves the Fed.
- **Why the reaction may be outsized** — positioning, not the number, is the real risk this week.
- **What you can do about it** — a toolkit for each of the two Septembers.

Stick around to the end: there's a poll and **288 points** in it for you.

#### Two Septembers, one number

Friday won't just tell us how many jobs the U.S. added in August. It tells us which of two Septembers we're living in:

- 🟢 **Fed on pause** — soft payrolls confirm a cooling labour market, and the hike stays off the table.
- 🔴 **Fed hikes again** — a hot print revives the hawks and re-prices everything from gold to semis.

🎯 Three dates settle it: **NFP (Sep 4) → CPI (Sep 11) → FOMC (Sep 15–16)**. Friday is the first vote — and the loudest.

### 1\. The clue we already have: Wednesday's ADP

The first hint is already on the table. On Wednesday, August **ADP private payrolls came in at just 38,000** — well below expectations. Line it up against the two months before it and the trend is hard to argue with:

**95k → 46k → 38k.** Private-sector hiring isn't wobbling; it's cooling in a straight line.

Markets read it the way you'd expect — one less reason for the Fed to hike, and a little relief for tense nerves. Gold moved first, as it usually does when rate-cut hopes come back to life $SPDR Gold Shares(GLD.US).

But ADP is the warm-up act. The report the Fed actually reads lands on Friday, and it has one job this week: **tell us whether the labour market is weak enough to keep a September hike off the table.**

### 2\. ADP vs NFP: only one of them moves the Fed

If this pair is new to you, here it is in one line: **ADP is the private-sector preview; NFP is the official verdict.**

So treat Wednesday's 38k as a weather vane, not a verdict. And notice the bottom two rows — NFP is the only one of the pair that carries the **unemployment rate** and **average hourly earnings**, the two lines FOMC members quote back at you. That's exactly why it, and not ADP, is what sends gold, crypto and U.S. equities moving within seconds of release.

### 3\. Why the reaction may be far bigger than the number

Here's the part most people skip. A surprise only matters as much as the **positioning** it lands on — and this week, positioning is unusually one-sided in three ways at once.

#### a) The algos are almost out of ammunition

BofA's latest estimates put the systematic crowd — CTAs and vol-target funds — close to **fully invested**. If markets grind higher, they have only about **$9bn** of buying left. If markets go flat, their models read "no trend" and they trim about **$1bn**. But if markets fall and volatility spikes, the same models flip to forced de-leveraging — **up to $163bn of selling**.

Read those three numbers together: **$9bn of upside fuel against $163bn of downside fuel.** That asymmetry, not the payroll number itself, is what makes Friday interesting.

#### b) Volatility is priced for a quiet week

Meanwhile, hedges are cheap: broad-market volatility sits near **14.3** and VVIX — the volatility of volatility — is close to historic lows. Cheap insurance is a symptom, not a promise; it tells you how few people are braced for a surprise.

#### c) The index is riding on a few shoulders

And the rally has narrowed. Short-term breadth has thinned — fewer S&P 500 names are holding above their 20-day moving average — so **the index is increasingly carried by mega-caps**. Narrow leadership cuts both ways: it's why the headline index still looks healthy, and why there's less underneath it to cushion a bad print.

The names doing the carrying: $NVIDIA(NVDA.US) $Microsoft(MSFT.US) $Apple(AAPL.US) $Alphabet - C(GOOG.US) $Amazon(AMZN.US) $Meta Platforms(META.US) $Tesla(TSLA.US) — plus the memory and semi-cap complex riding the same trade $Micron Tech(MU.US) $SK Hynix(SKHY.US) $Sandisk(SNDK.US) .

**Put the three together:** a market that is fully invested, cheaply hedged and narrowly led — walking into a binary number. That's not a forecast. It's a reason to decide what you'd do **before** 8:30 a.m. ET, not after.

### 4\. What the options market is pricing in

One last read before Friday. Options are pricing a move of roughly **±0.73%** for the S&P on the print — small enough to look harmless, big enough to confirm that traders still treat NFP as the month's main event.

And the calendar doesn't let up afterwards:

- **Fri, Sep 4 — NFP.** The first vote, and the subject of this post.
- **Thu, Sep 11 — CPI.** The inflation half of the Fed's mandate gets its say.
- **Mon–Tue, Sep 15–16 — FOMC.** The coin actually lands.

### 5\. Your toolkit for each of the two Septembers

You don't have to be right about the Fed to be **prepared** for it. Find the row that matches your view — and only that row.

## So: heads or tails?

September went from a quiet month to a three-act one. Act One is Friday morning: one number that tells us whether we're in the 🟢 September or the 🔴 September. Nobody gets to know the answer early — but unlike the Fed, you get to vote right now.

👇 **Cast your vote in the poll below, then tell us why in the comments.** We're reading every one — and we're paying 288 points for a good answer.
