China will lower the VAT export rebate for new energy vehicles from 13% to 9%, starting 1 April 2027. 🥹This change could squeeze profit margins for Chinese automakers selling overseas. For companies like BYD, Geely and XPeng, the key question is straightforward. Who will pay this extra cost?😟Automakers have three choices. They can absorb it and earn less per car. They can raise prices overseas and risk losing their competitive edge. Or they can cut costs through better supplier deals and greater efficiency. The challenge is that Chinese EV makers already compete heavily on price. If they cannot pass this cost to buyers, their profit on each exported car will drop.BYD is one to watch closely. One analyst estimate suggests the net profit impact could be roughly RMB 5,000 per exported vehicle. This is an estimate though, not official guidance. The real effect will depend on tax calculations, what models are shipped, and how much they can save elsewhere. For investors, stronger overseas sales no longer guarantee stronger profits. Will automakers absorb the cost, raise prices, or find ways to protect their margins?
