Apple’s return to the top spot also reflects investor preference for capital discipline as questions emerge over the returns on massive AI infrastructure investments. Its earnings report will therefore be important: investors will assess iPhone demand, services growth, margins and management’s AI strategy. A strong result could reinforce the view that Apple can monetise AI without matching competitors’ spending; weaker guidance or limited AI progress may challenge its premium valuation. Nvidia’s decline, meanwhile, does not necessarily undermine long-term AI demand, but indicates that expectations and spending efficiency are receiving greater scrutiny.
