The "2024 Golden Pen Award Hong Kong Primary and Secondary Schools Chinese Calligraphy Competition" (Filial Piety Chapter), jointly organized by the Hong Kong Roxwell Foundation, WE LIKE HONG KONG, the Hong Kong Shanxi Association, and the Hong Kong Guizhou Cultural Exchange Foundation, was successfully held on June 25. The event attracted participation from over 300 schools, with approximately 40,000 students, surpassing the previous record. The award ceremony took place on June 25 at the Sheung Wan Civic Centre in Hong Kong, where the winning works were also exhibited. This competition has been included as one of the projects of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation's Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Youth Public Welfare Annual Conference and was rated as an outstanding public welfare project. The purpose of the Golden Pen Award is to promote Chinese calligraphy art, helping young people cultivate calm, rational, and stable character traits while learning traditional Chinese Confucian classics to establish positive life values. The competition has long been supported by various elites and the academic community, becoming an annual grand event. This year, in addition to awards for local primary and secondary school students in Hong Kong, there was also a special award for non-Chinese-speaking students to encourage them to learn traditional Chinese culture. More significantly, the competition expanded to mainland China for the first time, with a special category for sister schools in the mainland. With the promotion and invitation from Hong Kong schools, over 500 students from sister schools in Beijing, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Guizhou, Sichuan, and other provinces and cities, as well as the Greater Bay Area, actively participated, marking the beginning of the Golden Pen Award's transformation into a national competition. It is believed that the competition will reach new heights in both form and scale in the future, becoming a cross-regional platform for students in Hong Kong, mainland China, and even overseas to exchange and inspire each other in traditional Chinese culture. The distinguished guests attending the award ceremony included Professor Hu Xiaoming, GBS, JP, Founding President of the Hong Kong Roxwell Foundation and Hong Kong Deputy to the National People's Congress; Founding Vice President Ms. Hu Liang Zihui; Mr. Ding Wushou, SBS, JP, Director of WE LIKE HK; Mr. Sun Weiyong, Council Member of the Hong Kong Roxwell Foundation and Hong Kong Deputy to the National People's Congress; Mr. Wu Teng, President of the Hong Kong Shanxi Association; Dr. Cheng Yan, Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Guizhou Cultural Exchange Foundation and Hong Kong Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; Ms. Su Lizhen, MH, JP, Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Guizhou Cultural Exchange Foundation; Mr. Mak Kar Hung, MH, Chairman of the YOU AND ME Foundation; Mr. Xi Bingsong, MH, Chief Executive Officer; Dr. Chen Weijia, MH, Council Member of the Hong Kong Roxwell Foundation and Vice Chairman of the New Territories School Heads Association; Dr. Ou Zhijian, Director of the Tian Jiabing Filial Piety Culture Research and Teaching Center; Principal Leung Wing Mui of Kowloon Sam Yuk Secondary School; Mr. Chen Qiming, Project Consultant of the Wofoo Social Enterprise; Mr. Wang Zitian, President of the Hong Kong Fine Art Research Association; Ms. Chen Yidan, Senior Co-Director of the Marketing Department of Centaline Property; Ms. Zhang Shaoling and Dr. Ho Wai Fung, Council Members of the Hong Kong Roxwell Foundation, among others. In his welcome speech, Professor Hu Xiaoming said, "The excellent traditional culture and resilient national spirit of the Chinese nation are our pride, and it is worth promoting students to understand the culture and history of our motherland. The Golden Pen Award is now in its third edition, following the themes of 'Benevolence and Propriety' and 'Loyalty and Righteousness.' This year's theme is 'Filial Piety,' hoping students will learn the values of respecting parents and loving siblings." Professor Hu also thanked the co-organizers and supporting institutions for their joint efforts in promoting the excellent virtues and culture of the Chinese nation and contributing to the cultivation of young people. Mr. Shi Junhui, JP, Deputy Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, congratulated the success of the third Golden Pen Award via video and pointed out that the theme of "Filial Piety" aligns with the "Filial Virtue" item among the twelve important values promoted by the Education Bureau. He agreed that the cultivation of calligraphy art benefits young students' sense of family and country. Mr. Wu Teng, President of the Hong Kong Shanxi Association, also encouraged students to enrich themselves with the treasures of traditional culture and expressed high appreciation for their efforts in practicing calligraphy. The Hong Kong Shanxi Association has been a co-organizer for the second year and will continue to contribute to youth education. Dr. Cheng Yan, Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Guizhou Cultural Exchange Foundation and Hong Kong Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, highly praised the students' performance, especially the younger primary school students who wrote beautifully at such a young age. Dr. Cheng also noted that the Hong Kong Guizhou Cultural Exchange Foundation actively promotes the sister school program, believing it enhances friendship and mutual progress between students from both regions. Ms. Zhao Ming, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Branch of the Chinese Calligraphers Association and one of the judges, highly praised the participants' performance, expressing great joy at seeing Hong Kong students dedicated to Chinese calligraphy art. Ms. Su Lizhen, MH, JP, Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Guizhou Cultural Exchange Foundation and another judge, was particularly impressed by the non-Chinese-speaking students' hard pen calligraphy and hoped the public would continue to promote Chinese cultural education for the younger generation. Principal Leung Wing Mui of Kowloon Sam Yuk Secondary School, along with three mainland sister schools from the Greater Bay Area, Zhejiang, and Guizhou, participated in the competition. She found it touching that students from both regions shared nourishment in calligraphy and filial piety traditions. Looking ahead, the Golden Pen Award organizing committee stated that they would intensify efforts to "take the Golden Pen Award abroad," expanding the competition to Macau, Taiwan, and even overseas, fulfilling the mission of promoting excellent Chinese culture.
