Today, I want to talk to everyone about—**the "gap" in trading.** Why call it a "small thing"? Because you see gaps every day when you look at K-line charts, but most of the time, we just glance over them. But in actual trading, these gaps can sometimes be like "landmines on a map." If you're not careful, the best-case scenario is turning a profit into a loss, and the worst-case is being stuck holding the bag for years. ## 1\. What is a gap? In one sentence: A gap is the blank area in a K-line chart where the price jumps. For example, if the closing price yesterday was 100 and today it opens at 105, the $5 difference with no trades in between is the "gap." But the key isn’t just that there’s a "hole"—it’s **how the hole formed, whether it will be filled later, and whether the price will continue to rise.** ## 2\. Gaps = Emotional + Capital Breakout Points Simply put, gaps aren’t created by retail investors. They often represent **a sudden directional stance by institutional capital.** ## The 4 Types of Gaps, Explained: ## ① Common Gap: No big deal, just noise from retail traders Common in range-bound markets, appears and disappears quickly. Usually gets filled quickly and doesn’t serve as a trading signal. Example: Some low-volume small-cap stocks in the U.S. market might gap up on news but drop back down in a few days. ## Breakaway Gap: A signal to go big! Usually appears during **a breakout from a key consolidation zone.** Accompanied by high volume, often marking the start of a trend. Example: **NVIDIA’s gap-up after Q1 2023 earnings, which never got filled and led to a massive rally**, is a classic breakaway gap. Strategy: **Follow the trend or add on pullbacks to the gap’s low.** ## Continuation Gap: A mid-trend pit stop Appears in the middle of an uptrend or downtrend. Signals that big money is doubling down. Example: During TSLA’s bull runs, it often gaps up repeatedly—these "serial gaps" reflect institutional investors adding positions in batches. Strategy: **Hold tight! You can even add more.** ## Exhaustion Gap: The final push Appears at the end of a trend, with extreme volume. Often the "last gasp" before a reversal. Example: **Zoom’s gap-down from all-time highs in 2021, with explosive volume, followed by a sharp drop to fill the gap the next day**, was a clear exhaustion signal. Strategy: **Take profits, reduce positions, or even go short.** ## 3\. Is the saying "All gaps must be filled" reliable? Many have heard the old adage: "Gaps will eventually be filled." My take: **Don’t take it as gospel, but don’t ignore it either.** **Common gaps** usually get filled; **Breakaway and continuation gaps** might stay unfilled for years (e.g., AAPL, NVDA, U.S. indices); **Exhaustion gaps** get filled the fastest, often marking tops or bottoms. So the key isn’t "whether it gets filled" but **what you do before it does.** ## 4\. Practical Tips (Save for later) ## 5\. How I Combine Gaps with Technical Analysis Gaps are just the result—**don’t view them in isolation.** I like to pair them with: **MACD**: A gap + golden cross or divergence significantly improves success rates; **Bollinger Bands**: A gap + upper band breakout or band expansion often signals a strong trend; **Volume Profile**: Check if the gap breaks through a major support/resistance zone with heavy volume. ## Final Thoughts Gaps aren’t mysticism—they’re imprints of capital momentum. Understanding gaps means understanding the market’s choices at that moment. Next time you see a gap, don’t just spectate. Ask yourself three things: "What type of gap is this?" "Is there volume confirmation?" "Are other indicators aligning?" Answer these, and you might catch the trend early—or exit before it reverses.
