Today is Chinese New Year's Eve, first wishing all investors prosperity in the Year of the Horse! For 2026, at least in the first half, the stock market remains actively viable, with appropriate attention to risks in the second half. The Hong Kong stock market is open for trading today, with half-day trading in the morning and closed in the afternoon. The next trading day is the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, February 20th. **Based on past experience, the Hong Kong market is relatively prone to experience some sharp, short-lived spikes when the Southbound Stock Connect is closed, especially tending to rise first and then fall.** This year has been quite tough for Hong Kong stocks. By tough, it doesn't mean there are no opportunities at all, but the market performance has been quite fragmented. For example, the sectors that have performed well this year are not the ones most people are familiar with. **They are mainly the Hang Seng Consumer and (YTD 13%+) Hang Seng Healthcare (YT** **D 11%+); the most familiar Hang Seng Tech has been the worst performer this year, down -3% year-to-date. Meanwhile, Hong Kong dividend stocks have performed neither well nor poorly, but at least delivered positive returns.** Recently, I've been mentioning the counterattack of traditional economy sectors compared to the previous AI beneficiaries (mainly tech/internet stocks). These traditional sectors are also using AI to improve efficiency, while possessing moats that are difficult to shake (such as monopolies in capital, land, resources). **These moats carry a much lower risk of being rapidly replaced in a short time compared to "softer" things like software and the internet.** As for Hong Kong-listed internet companies, although they are also beneficiaries and promoters of AI, recent events like the red envelope wars among large language models show that competition is still fierce, and it's hard for any single player to claim a clear lead. Finally, a reminder: the US stock market is closed tonight, not because they also celebrate New Year's Eve, **but because it coincides with the Presidents' Day holiday commemorating Washington's Birthday.** Trading will resume as usual tomorrow night.
