For anyone, at any time, the primary task is to protect the principal and not let one's capital suffer permanent erosion. This applies even to those with no money, as good health itself is capital.

Without violating this primary task, whether to speculate can be a choice. Therefore, the choice of whether to speculate is not the key point itself. It is related to personal ability, personality, goals, and many other factors.

Buy regular stocks, buy good companies, buy the good stocks of those good companies that you can hold for ten years, and buy them in a diversified manner. It doesn't matter if any one or several of them fall for a year or two. Finding good companies and good targets, designing proper position sizing and timing, simulating various possible scenarios (including extreme ones), and planning solutions—this is the part ordinary people should focus on researching.
