# Dolphin Daily | From Circuit Break to Rebound Overnight: Money Dumps AI hardware for Value — Dip Buy or Rotation?

Good morning! It is Oct 16, 2026 Beijing time. Dolphin Research brings you a one-glance read on global markets.

Moves: Oct 15 (Thu) close vs. prior session.

**Trading focus**: Anthropic's quarterly revenue growth slowed and memory supply fears hit. Asia chip stocks plunged, KOSPI -7.6% with a trading halt, SK hynix -11%.

**Anthropic ARR keeps bubbling up:** the market may mark down valuation. Meanwhile, veteran semi investor Gavin Baker tried to calm nerves, saying Anthropic + OAI combined Q3 growth is actually accelerating. Slower for longer is healthy.

**Dolphin take:** for AI use-case penetration, 2026 traction is concentrated in coding where machine-language HMI fits best. Penetration into design and everyday white-collar workflows looks like a slow build. Slower for longer is good, but should linearly extrapolated AI valuations be reset?

**U.S. stocks saw a V-shaped reversal**: money rotated out of AI hardware into mobile, industrial internet, healthcare and staples. NOW +6.1%, CRM +4.6%, Philly Semi -0.9% with a seven-day slide.

**Jensen's therapy session:** NVIDIA's CEO said on a podcast that CoreWeave's borrowing costs are actually moving lower. He is a shareholder and CoreWeave's orders are mostly for NVIDIA chips.

**Macro sentiment**: Sep PPI +1.3% MoM, core +0.7% MoM, retail sales +0.8%, all smashing estimates. Yet haven flows pushed the 10Y UST down ~10bps to 5.09%.

**Key movers**: TSMC's Q3 was 'strong revenue, softer GPM'. Taiwan -4.1%, ADR -1.8%. Servers (DELL -6.8%, HPE -7.1%) and networking led decliners.

**Near-term watch**: tonight Fed Chair Wosh speaks with the IMF Managing Director, then the blackout starts on Oct 17. U.S. Sep import prices and industrial production are due.

Next week: Oct 21 META, TSLA, LRCX earnings. Oct 22 WDC, BE earnings.

Oct 27–28: FOMC, baseline pricing for an Oct hold and a Dec hike.

$Taiwan Semiconductor(TSM.US) 、$NVIDIA(NVDA.US) 、$SK Hynix(SKHY.US) 、$Samsung Electronics (SSNGY.US) 、$Micron Tech(MU.US) 、$Microsoft(MSFT.US) 、$Meta Platforms(META.US) 、$Oracle(ORCL.US) 、$Coreweave(CRWV.US) 、$Dell Tech(DELL.US) 、$ServiceNow(NOW.US) 、$Salesforce(CRM.US) 、$LENOVO GROUP(00992.HK) 、$Z.AI(02513.HK)

**1\. TSMC Q3: AI demand 'exceptionally strong', but GPM missed buyside hopes**

Revenue was set, the swing factor was margin: Q3 GPM at 66.4% (vs. buyside ~67.5%), Q4 guide mid at 66% (vs. buyside ~67%). 2nm ramp and overseas fabs diluted margin.

2026 capex held at $60–64bn, no 2027 guide. Taiwan -4.1%, ADR -1.8% (see stock section).

On the call, they did not quantify GPU/CPU TAM growth, only said demand far exceeds supply. They also unusually said they will not leave 'food on the table' for others.

**2\. U.S. V-shaped reversal: rotating from AI hardware into software**

Nasdaq was down as much as 1.4% intraday and closed +0.1%. The Dow +1.1%, Russell 2000 +1.4%, equal-weight S&P +1.4%, which Bloomberg called a 'rotation'.

Application software +2.4%, system software +1.1%. Semi equipment -1.9%, comms equipment -2.3% (see heatmap above).

The logic: Anthropic's slowdown implies AI displacing software is not imminent, while financing risks around AI hardware keep brewing.

**5\. Technical bounce after New Cloud debt scare**

CRWV +5.9%, ORCL +3.0%, WULF +9.4%. The day before they fell 15.5%, 8.8% and 12.6%, respectively.

Jensen Huang both raised shipment expectations for Vera Rubin on a podcast and vouched for CRWV's financials.

**1\. PPI and retail blew past, yet long rates fell**

**Sep PPI +1.3% MoM** (consensus +0.3%), the largest in ~4.5 years; +6.3% YoY (consensus 5.3%). **Core +0.7% MoM.**

Energy drove over 80% of goods inflation. The oil shock is passing down the chain.

**Retail sales +0.8% MoM** (consensus +0.3%), with Aug revised to +1.3%. Initial claims at 199k, in line.

**Rates**: 10Y UST -10bps to 5.09%, 2Y -5bps to 4.76%. The hotter the data, the more the long end fell, as haven bids tied to AI and debt worries sold equities and bought bonds.

**Fed**: CME showed Oct hike odds spiked from ~29% to 34% after PPI, then faded to ~27% into the close. Baseline remains 'on hold in Oct, hike in Dec'.

**For tech**: long-end retreat eased valuation pressure. But inflation is broadening into core, leaving tail risk of more hikes, so richly valued AI hardware remains first to be trimmed.

**2\. Big movers (Oct 15)**

**Gold +1.7% to ~$4,179, silver +3.1%**: UST yields and the USD fell, lifting haven demand.

**WTI +1.1% to ~$96**: crude inventories fell more than expected. The IEA said it will soon release over 20mn barrels of diesel reserves.

**Russell 2000 +1.4%, VIX -2.4% to 16.5**: rotation within U.S. equities favored small-cap and value.

**Asia** Oct 16 open: with DXY and UST yields down, Asia opened firmer across HK, A-shares, Singapore, Taiwan and Korea.

**TSM** | $2.19tn | **-1.8%**

Taiwan -4.1%; ADR fell less. Q3 revenue $46.7bn (+41%), net income NTD 763.1bn (+69%), with revenue and EPS slightly beating.

Guidance and margin see Trading Focus. 2nm contributed 8% of wafer revenue, with N2 capacity to double by 2027.

Call: AI accelerator revenue CAGR for 2024–2029 'likely above' mid-to-high 50%, with no signs of slowing.

Investments in 2026–2028 will be 'significantly higher' than the prior three years. A second 3nm fab was added in Tainan, Texas expansion is under evaluation, and Terafab talks continue.

**Dolphin view: TSMC is a 'only deliver, no hype' chain leader. Without the 40%+ 2027 guide and $85bn+ capex the market wanted, it is hard to please near term.**

**On ~17x 2027E PE, it sits near the low end of its 20–30x historical band. Once the sector beta stabilizes, it could re-rate above 20x (**[**cf.**](https://longbridge.com/en/dolphin/post/44360818)**).**

**NVDA** | $5.25tn | **-1.8%**

Philly Semi fell for the seventh day; the sector -1.1%. NVDA matched TSMC ADR's drop.

On the Big2 podcast, Jensen Huang lifted the 2028 FY growth guide to 70% vs. 60% prior. Dolphin estimates the uplift mainly reflects Vera CPU demand.

Into earnings (Nov 17): consensus revenue ~$109.0bn (+91%). Concerns focus on downstream customers increasingly levering up to expand.

**Dolphin view:** NVIDIA is fine operationally, with ongoing ASIC competition. The market is focused on rate risk for customer debt.

**AVGO** | $1.64tn | **-0.6%**

Per Bloomberg, ByteDance is in talks with MediaTek on a custom data center ASIC, making MediaTek a potential second large client after GOOGL.

AVGO CEO Hock Tan said on Oct 12 that 'capital, not chips, is the biggest bottleneck to AI expansion'. That remark kept echoing this week.

**QCOM +3.3% / ARM +2.8%**

A Delaware jury found QCOM did not violate ARM's license, lifting the legal overhang and extending the rebound. Some procedures are ongoing.

ARM rose alongside, likely on dip buying after an overshoot.

**AMD -1.5%**

AMD notified customers of price hikes on embedded lines (FPGA, embedded SoC, system modules, accelerator cards, etc.). New pricing applies to shipments after Dec 27 this year, citing supply-chain inflation.

**Dolphin view:** these lines are a small revenue share, but it signals AI-driven price rises spreading along legacy chains. For AMD, CPU is the core base today, server CPU is in an upcycle with limited debate, providing tangible lift. After the pullback, if Agentic AI keeps breaking out in 2026, it could be an opportunity.

**AMAT -3.7% / LRCX -3.3%**

The storage duo's plunge stoked capex fears for memory. Reuters said SK hynix is tying approvals for new U.S. NAND fab tools and new U.S. tools for its Dalian site (which uses LRCX, AMAT, KLA).

On the other side, Wells Fargo's SEMICON West checks argued supply-chain capacity, not demand, is the constraint. AMAT expects advanced packaging revenue to top $2.4bn in 2026 (+70%).

SEMI raised 2026 global 300mm fab equipment spend to $149.0bn (+31%). LRCX reports on Oct 21.

**000660.KS -11.1% / 005930.KS -9.5%**

See Trading Focus for the Korea plunge driver. Samsung and SK hynix combined are about half of KOSPI's market cap, and KOSPI is down ~34% from its Jun peak.

DigiTimes reported Samsung has completed next-gen 4F² DRAM, matching CXMT's year-end timeline, adding long-term supply variables.

On the other side, Samsung signed five-year LTAs with NVDA, GOOGL, MSFT, locking in nearly 80% of 2027 capacity. Most houses anchor price peaks in 2027.

Korean media said Samsung and SK hynix rose over 3% premarket on Oct 16.

**Dolphin view: SK hynix has less value tied to fixed-price LTAs, so it swings more with sentiment. This drawdown is about 'cycle peak' worries and crowded foreign longs, not earnings cuts, while supply still lags demand, providing a cushion (**[**cf.**](https://longbridge.com/zh-CN/dolphin/post/44254494)**).**

**MU** | $1.05tn | **+1.9%**

Intraday it fell over 6% to $858 (lowest since Aug 11), then reversed higher. HSBC and Daiwa said the CXMT threat is overstated and the pullback is a buying opp.

Reuters reported MU's new Taiwan OSAT capacity for 2027 is fully sold, and the COO expects HBM growth to outpace DRAM overall through 2028.

Also, per KeyBanc, Micron SSD 4Q26 pricing rose 40–46% QoQ, about 20ppts above consensus. Taiwan employees authorized a strike over bonuses, with a 10/19 rally planned; shares are still down ~12% on the week.

**Dolphin view: the memory 'feast' is in its second half. The question is shifting from 'how high' to 'how long' (**[**cf.**](https://longbridge.com/zh-CN/dolphin/post/44142559)**), and pullbacks create opportunity, which we are nearing.**

**STX -3.2% / WDC -2.1%**

HDDs fell as much as 5% premarket in sympathy with memory. WDC reports Oct 22, STX on Oct 27, with worries about a price peak, while bulls point to LTAs with locked pricing.

**ANET -5.0% / CSCO -3.3% / COHR -4.8% / LITE -3.0%**

Morgan Stanley CIO survey: CSCO still leads expected network spend share over the next three years (+28%), ANET +25%, but overall intent plunged.

Project delays jumped from 2% to 13%, and orders affected by macro rose from ~12% to ~20%. 40% of CIOs said another price hike would delay purchases.

With profit-taking, networking and opticals became the main exit points for AI hardware exposure.

**300308.SZ -5.2% / 300476.SZ -4.7%**

A-share optical modules and PCB followed the overnight plunge in U.S. opticals (Oct 14 CIEN/LITE/COHR -9% to -10%).

**DELL -6.8% / HPE -7.1%**

After Barclays cut DELL, HPE, NTAP to Neutral on Oct 14, shares kept sliding: server revenue growth looks more like DRAM price pass-through than an enterprise AI demand inflection.

DELL fell 11.3% and HPE 8.3% the prior day; no new sell-side actions were seen that day.

**Dolphin view: last quarter DELL was driven by both legacy and AI new products (**[**cf.**](https://longbridge.com/zh-CN/dolphin/post/43707682)**). The memory-price tailwind has faded, and AI orders are clustered at 'new cloud' names under financing pressure, so shares will get dragged with them.**

**Lenovo 0992.HK** | **-14.5%**

Worst Hang Seng component, hitting a two-month low. As a CN proxy, it fell alongside U.S. AI server assemblers.

**AAPL** | $4.99tn | **-0.3%**

Tim Cook confirmed Apple Intelligence for China has been approved, with a beta in Oct and a Dec launch with iOS 27.3. Alibaba provides compliance safeguards, BIDU provides search.

KeyBanc kept UW, PT $250: early iPhone 18 strength may not sustain, with FY27 revenue/EPS cut by 4.2%/3.9%.

IDC: Q3 global smartphone shipments -22%, the worst on record, with memory costs up ~350% YoY. AAPL and Samsung held up better thanks to premium mix.

Into earnings (Nov 2): worries focus on memory inflation squeezing GPM, while bulls look to the foldable iPhone Duo (on sale Oct 23) and China AI rollout.

**MSFT** | $4.01tn | **+1.1%**

UBS raised PT from $525 to $675: Azure's Q1 growth hurdle is ~47%, but channel checks, OpenAI, and GPU pricing still support upside.

Copilot's shift to usage-based pricing and broader AI security adoption lift M365 expectations. Earnings on Oct 28.

**Dolphin view: MSFT is 'back on top again' (**[**cf.**](https://longbridge.com/en/dolphin/post/43074651)**). As AI hardware sells off, platform names with realized revenue are the haven again.**

**GOOGL** | $4.27tn | **+0.5%**

JP Morgan sharply raised Google Cloud estimates: ~100% in Q3, ~105% in Q4, ~107% in 2027, mainly on TPU sales recognition.

Jefferies still sees ~30% upside after stress-testing four bear cases: cloud backlog is ~3x capex, and AI server payback is under two years.

Into earnings (Oct 28): consensus revenue $127.6bn (+25%), EPS growth only ~5%. Focus on cloud growth and capex.

**AMZN** | $2.75tn | **+0.3%**

JP Morgan expects AWS to accelerate to ~40% by 2027; GPU reservation prices in Oct were raised ~15%, the fourth straight quarter.

Other trackers show AWS at ~44% growth. AWS is also Anthropic's core compute supplier, so its revenue slowdown is marginally negative for Trainium deliveries.

Into earnings (Oct 29): consensus revenue $202.1bn (+12%), with attention on AWS growth and Trainium progress.

**META** | $1.88tn | **-0.1%**

Launched the open-weights model Muse Spark Open (816bn total params, 42bn activated), claiming the strongest U.S. open-weights model.

Oppenheimer: Muse downloads ~10.8mn, but at 100mn users the service cost could be ~$30bn/yr. They cut 2027 EPS by ~4% and flagged potential equity financing ahead of an Anthropic IPO.

Reports on Oct 21; see earnings preview below.

**ORCL +3.0% / CRWV +5.9%**

Technical rebound after the prior day's plunge on CDS and unsecured debt. CDS spreads narrowed the most at CRWV thanks to Jensen's support, but other highly levered new-cloud names did not improve.

**Dolphin view: the new-cloud problem is projects cannot cover 15% funding costs. A one-day bounce does not change the 'financing-driven' nature (**[**cf.**](https://longbridge.com/en/dolphin/post/43349090)**).**

**0700.HK** | $479.5bn | **-1.3%**

Fell with Hang Seng Tech. Launched 'Green Bubbles' short-drama mini-app vs. Hongguo, and AI short drama 'Queen Yaya' topped hundreds of millions of views in 3 days.

**Dolphin view: office Agents are a clearer monetization path than personal Agents. 0700.HK's edge is distribution and user data (**[**cf.**](https://longbridge.com/en/dolphin/post/44318101)**).**

**BABA** | $276.5bn | **-0.0%** (HK -3.7% on Oct 15)

Will provide compliance safeguards for Apple Intelligence in China, and Qianwen will be integrated into Apple Intelligence.

HK weakness was mainly sector-driven; U.S. ADR was flat.

**NOW +6.1% / CRM +4.6%**

Rotation from AI hardware into oversold software. NOW's president again denied interest in acquiring Decagon, alleviating M&A concerns.

BofA upgraded CRM to Buy on Oct 12 (PT $285). NOW reports Oct 28.

**Dolphin view: the AI-replacement narrative may be overstated, but software has become a 'tough biz.' renting compute. Valuations can repair but likely won't regain past premia (**[**cf.**](https://longbridge.com/en/dolphin/post/43616657)**). Today's move looks more like defensive value positioning.**

**Anthropic (private)** | Q3 revenue **$16.8bn** (+45% QoQ)

Per a Trans, Anthropic plans a Nasdaq listing in Nov, with the roadshow possibly starting the week of Nov 9, seeking up to ~$100bn.

Compute commitments total at least $518bn over 7–10 years, with ~80% non-cancelable. The FTC has issued CIDs to OpenAI and Anthropic.

**Dolphin view: model revenue is the foundation of AI infra's stacked leverage. If the foundation is not thick enough, the superstructure wobbles (**[**cf.**](https://longbridge.com/en/dolphin/post/43474235)**).**

**Monthly growth has slipped to single digits, right as the IPO pricing window opens. A $2tn valuation needs Oct metrics to re-accelerate.**

**Zhipu 2513.HK -10.2% / MimiMax 0100.HK -12.1%**

After Anthropic's ARR disappointment, chatter says the valuation mark shifted from $2tn to $1.5tn, dragging China peers. Meanwhile, top-tier model price wars and anti-distillation moves are major headwinds for both.

**Dolphin view: China model leaders take turns in the spotlight; 2026 is 'Zhipu's year'. But linear extrapolation into 2027 is risky and the premium is already rich (**[**cf.**](https://longbridge.com/en/dolphin/post/43682364)**).**

**SPCX** | $1.96tn | **-2.3%**

Barclays says a TSLA–SPCX merger is becoming consensus, likely with SPCX acquiring TSLA in an all-stock deal, leaving Musk with ~56% voting power.

The strategy is vertical AI integration across Robotaxi/Optimus, Grok, shared Terafab compute and orbital data centers.

Per Bloomberg, SPCX's spectrum purchases also make it a potential rival to telcos, though terrestrial base stations remain heavy-engineering, heavy-capex.

**TSLA** | $1.43tn | **-1.3%**

Barclays kept Neutral, PT $370. The merger timing could be before the 2026 AGM, otherwise in 6–12 months.

TSMC's call confirmed they are discussing using Terafab capacity with clients, from Arizona to Texas. Reports on Oct 21; see earnings preview below.
