The research, conducted by institutions including Chengdu University of Electronic Science and Technology, analyzed data from 191,956 participants and found that consuming 1 unit of sugary drinks daily is associated with an increased risk of CKD. The risk ratio for sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is 1.45, while the risk ratio for artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) is 1.52. Natural fruit juice shows a J-shaped relationship with CKD risk, with the lowest risk at 0-1 units" datetime: "2025-01-20T07:05:28.000Z" locales: - [zh-CN](https://longbridge.com/zh-CN/news/225512675.md) - [en](https://longbridge.com/en/news/225512675.md) - [zh-HK](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/225512675.md) generator: "portal-rs" --- # Front Nutri: The excessive intake of artificially sweetened beverages and sugary drinks may be directly related to the occurrence of chronic kidney disease in the body Although multiple studies have linked the intake of sugary beverages to the occurrence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the roles of different types of sugary beverages in the development of CKD remain inconsistent. Recently, a research report titled "Sugary beverages intake and risk of chronic kidney disease: the mediating role of metabolic syndrome" published in the international journal *Frontiers in Nutrition* revealed that scientists from Chengdu University of Electronic Science and Technology and other institutions found a positive association between high intake of artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and the occurrence of chronic kidney disease. Researcher Xiao-Yu Dai stated that the aim of this study was to analyze the association between SSBs, ASBs, and natural juices (NJs) with the risk of chronic kidney disease, thereby assessing the degree of association mediated by metabolic syndrome (MetS). The study included 191,956 participants from the UK Biobank, with a median follow-up time of 10.6 years. The impact of sugary beverage, artificially sweetened beverage, and natural juice intake on the risk of chronic kidney disease The researchers found that high intake of SSBs and ASBs (one unit per day vs none) was associated with an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (the risk ratio for SSBs was 1.45, and for ASBs it was 1.52). There was a J-shaped association between natural juice and chronic kidney disease, with the lowest risk at 0-1 unit per day (the risk ratio for 0-1 unit per day vs none was 0.86); for chronic kidney disease patients with higher intake of SSBs and ASBs, the associations mediated by metabolic syndrome were 12.5% and 18.0%, respectively. The researchers noted that although causality cannot be determined, our findings emphasize the importance of limiting SSBs or ASBs to prevent chronic kidney disease, and further studies are needed to confirm these findings and explore the optimal level of natural juice intake. In summary, the results of this study indicate that high intake of artificially sweetened beverages and sugar-sweetened beverages may be positively associated with the occurrence of chronic kidney disease, while moderate intake of natural juice is negatively associated with the risk of chronic kidney disease; therefore, it is essential to strengthen policy promotion to reduce the population's intake of artificially sweetened beverages and sugar-sweetened beverages, effectively preventing the occurrence of chronic kidney disease (Bioon.com) References: Xiao-Yu Dai, Xiang-Yu Chen, Li-Na Jia, et al.
