# Non-Fiction Comic Scholarship Inviting Chinese-speaking Creators to Submit Works

Attempting to preserve the first scene through comics, Huang Peishan, the editor-in-chief of Slow Work Culture, and media personality Zhang Jieping initiated a nurturing program, launching the "On-Site Non-Fiction Comic Scholarship," which uses Chinese as the language of submission and is open to applicants of any nationality and age, with a deadline of March 1.

Zhang Jieping, the platform manager of Matters, is one of the organizers of the "On-Site" program. Matters, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Renaissance Foundation, first launched the "On-Site" Non-Fiction Writing Scholarship program in 2021 to encourage global non-fiction Chinese creators to document "must-write" true stories. The "On-Site Non-Fiction Comic Scholarship" focuses on comic content and invites Chinese creators to propose ideas.

The organizers stated on their official website that "non-fiction comics" or "documentary comics" do not have absolute definitions and hope to see everyone's thoughts during the submission process. They suggest thinking of "non-fiction" as an attitude of seeking truth, emphasizing that the focus is not on whether a stance, style, or design is included, but rather on whether one has first undergone the process of "seeking truth" before expressing and transforming it.

The judging criteria are based on both text and images. For example, descriptive text must adhere to the standards of literary journalism and be verifiable facts, while images can be abstract metaphors based on facts. The dialogue of comic characters should also be primarily based on reality but can be edited for narrative purposes.

Applicants must create in Chinese and in comic form, regardless of nationality, region, age, or background, and submissions can be in the form of page comics or strip comics. Winners will receive professional workshops to enhance their skills, one-on-one editing, four months of full support, and publication on the "On-Site" official website. The scholarship will also facilitate global licensing or publishing arrangements for the works and actively arrange for their publication in other media.

In terms of scholarship amounts, the first prize is $6,000 (approximately NT$190,000), the second prize is $3,000, and the third prize is $2,000
