National People's Congress representative and Chairman of Kanion Pharmaceutical, Xiao Wei: Classic Chinese medicine formulas need to be "awakened" and also "renewed"

At the 2025 National Two Sessions, Xiao Wei, a representative of the National People's Congress, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and chairman of Kanion Pharmaceutical, focused his suggestions on the field of classic Chinese medicine formulas. In Xiao Wei's view, to meet modern medical needs, ancient classic Chinese medicine formulas not only need to be "awakened" but also need to be "renewed." Regarding the classic formulas' "what components are effective and why they are effective," Xiao Wei believes that basic research centered on effective substances should be strengthened. Moreover, the research and development of new drugs based on classic formulas must focus on clinically effective material foundations to further analyze the effective substances and targets of the complex system of Chinese medicine, scientifically explaining the safety and efficacy of new drugs based on classic formulas. In terms of Chinese medicine manufacturing, Xiao Wei suggests that the QbD (Quality by Design) concept should be the core, using the effective components in classic formulas as quality control indicators, implementing instantaneous control of "points" from process technology to quality control standards, as well as control adjustments between "segments" of processes, and ensuring consistency in quality between "batches," fundamentally guaranteeing the uniformity, stability, and controllability of traditional Chinese medicine products
