# HuaChuang Securities: The dual drive of new energy and robotics propels the growth of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene

According to the Zhitong Finance APP, Huachuang Securities has released a research report stating that ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), as a high-performance specialty material, has broad application prospects in fields such as new energy, military industry, and robotics due to its excellent wear resistance, chemical stability, and lightweight characteristics. It is recommended to pay attention to core targets such as TYZ (688722.SH), Nanshan Fashion (300918.SZ), Levima (003022.SZ), and EASTERN SHENGHONG (000301.SZ). With the growing demand for lithium battery separators and tendon materials for humanoid robots, coupled with the acceleration of the localization process, the industry is expected to enter a high-speed growth phase.

## The main viewpoints of Huachuang Securities are as follows:

**Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene: High molecular weight linear specialty material**

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is synthesized from ethylene using metallocene catalysts and has a molecular weight ranging from 1.5 million to 6 million. Due to its high molecular weight and linear structure, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene possesses exceptional wear resistance, self-lubrication, high strength, chemical stability, and aging resistance, and is mainly used in defense, aerospace, new energy, outdoor/home textiles, medical, marine, and humanoid robot fields.

**Global market demand reaches tens of billions, with new energy and robotics expected to drive demand explosion**

According to statistics from Grand View Research, the global ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene resin market is expected to reach USD 6.31 billion by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of 15.8% from 2025 to 2030. According to GYR's statistics and forecasts, the market size for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers is expected to be USD 1.035 billion in 2023. The downstream applications of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene are mainly in lithium battery separators, military bulletproof and explosion-proof equipment, outdoor equipment, medical devices, and may also be used for tendon materials in humanoid robots in the future.

According to statistics from Longzhong Information, the demand in the separator field is expected to reach 110,000 tons in 2023, accounting for 40% of the total apparent demand, while the demand for sheets and profiles is expected to reach 70,000 tons, accounting for 25% of the total apparent demand, with fibers and pipes accounting for 15% and 13%, respectively. It is expected that with the demand pull from lithium batteries, humanoid robots, and military industry, the demand growth for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene will be considerable.

**Localization rate significantly improved, costs and efficiency continuously optimized**

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene resin was first commercialized by Germany's Hoechst in 1958, and the Netherlands' DSM industrialized the fiber in the 1970s. Although it has excellent performance, the high cost limits its market space. In 1994, Beijing Additives Factory No. 2 first achieved the production of a 10,000-ton production line, and in 1999, Donghua University achieved the industrial synthesis of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers. Since then, Chinese companies have begun to continuously invest in the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene industry.

In recent years, with the significant growth in demand for lithium battery separators, domestic ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene resin production capacity has been rapidly released. As of now, the total production capacity of domestic ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is approximately 270,000 tons/year, with 320,000 tons under construction and about 480,000 tons planned for new construction. The result of domestic competition has been a rapid decline in production costs and a rapid increase in production efficiency. The unit price of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene resin has decreased from CNY 15,900/ton in 2017 to CNY 13,900/ton in 2023, while the unit price of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers has decreased from CNY 104,400/ton in 2017 to CNY 81,100/ton in 2023 **The fiber segment has higher technical and capital barriers, resulting in higher product added value**

The average price of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene resin has been around 13,000 to 14,000 yuan/ton in the past five years, while the unit price of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber has continued to decline but remains above 60,000 yuan/ton. On one hand, the spinning process of fibers is more complex, leading to higher technical barriers; on the other hand, the investment intensity in the fiber segment is greater, with relatively fewer players. The investment per ton for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene resin is 22,800 yuan, while the investment per ton for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber is 83,500 yuan, significantly higher than that of the resin segment, thus creating higher capital barriers.

**Recommendations for attention**

1. TYZ: The company has an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber production capacity of 8,560 tons and a non-woven fabric production capacity of 2,175 tons. 2) Nanshan Fashion: The company's current total production capacity for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber is 3,600 tons. 3) Levima: The company has a production capacity of 20,000 tons of membrane-grade ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene resin. 4) EASTERN SHENGHONG: The company has a production capacity of 20,000 tons of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene resin.

**Risk Warning:** The speed of new capacity release exceeds expectations, leading to a significant price drop; downstream demand in military, medical, and other sectors falls short of expectations, etc
