It’s something one can wear every day; it very well might last forever; it makes a statement; and it represents an understanding of what’s truly valuable – time and your loved ones.\nBut watches are a significant commitment, which means buying them for others can cause a lot of anxiety. However, it’s especially sweet to surprise someone with a bold gift – if you have the guts for it. To help with that endeavour, I’ve put together a holiday gift guide.\n\nThe following are real types of people I’ve been asked to recommend a watch for.\nFor your nephew, who wants a steel watch to wear on his first job interviews\nTissot PR 100\n\nTissot is a great brand for a quartz or an automatic watch. Many of the styles echo other more prominent brands – you’ll see models that look like Rolexes or IWCs – but they’re different enough that they don’t feel like dupes. I like the Tissot PR 100, which comes in a bunch of sizes and colours, but there are tons of great options to choose from. US$350\nFor a high-powered lady who loves a watch with diamonds\nChopard Alpine Eagle 33\n\nAt Rolliefest, the elite collector’s conclave that gathered in New York City earlier this autumn, I was seated next to a banking executive who told me of her love for learning about and admiring highly complicated watches – but when it comes to what she wants to wear, it’s stuff with diamonds on it. The blinged out Alpine Eagle models from Chopard are a great combo of ruggedness and sparkle, and this one comes in a modest 33mm case size that still contains an automatic movement. (A lot of small ladies’ watches with diamonds are quartz.) US$$49,500\nFor someone who wants their first ‘serious’ watch\nIWC Schaffhausen Pilot’s Watch Mark XX\n\nWhen a person asks me about getting a “real” timepiece, I always send them to a multibrand store to look around. Invariably, they come out with one of two watches: a Rolex, because they feel like that’s what they should get, or an IWC, because they fell in love. And the folks who buy IWCs always end up very happy – the watches get compliments, they go with almost any kind of outfit and they are eternally classic. They also come in many different colour and material choices, and they’re well-made. You can’t go wrong with a Portugieser, or a Pilot’s Watch like this one in green, at a perfect 40mm size. US$5,800\nFor a finance guy who started at an office where everyone wears a different watch each day\nPanerai Luminor Quaranta\n\nEven I was surprised by this request, but what a fun assignment. What I’d recommend at the moment is this Panerai 40mm Quaranta, which excited me when it came out in 2022; it’s a smaller version of the beefy Luminor dive watches and could fit more easily under a suit sleeve. I love the way that Panerais look, but I have dainty wrists, and the recent arrival of the brand’s smaller sizes across their collections has been a blessing. This one also comes with an extra rubber strap for sportier activities. US$8,200\nFor a nonprofit lawyer\nNomos Glashütte Tangomat Date\n\nSomeone who does good in the world at an elite level needs a strong watch that’s not flashy – something to be quietly proud of, like the work they do. At 38.3mm across and 8.3mm high, this watch sits perfectly on the wrist, and I love to peer into the transparent caseback. Nomos is an excellent German brand that likes to play with colour, and its Club Campus line offers a bunch of fun options. And in the spirit of do-gooding, they even have a line of watches whose sales benefit Medecins Sans Frontieres. I’ve convinced so many people to buy Tangomats that I can’t not recommend them. US$4,310\nFor a mum who would never buy a fancy watch for herself and who doesn’t want something expensive\nLongines Dolcevita 18K gold and stainless steel\n\nThe husband who asked for this recommendation ended up telling his wife he was going to splurge to get her a nice watch. She told him not to, so he didn’t. For the record, he shouldn’t have listened to her! There are plenty of watches from Longines that look fabulous and classic – for both men and women. I particularly like this one, which is 20 mm across and has a quartz movement. It’ll last forever and never go out of style. US$2,400\nFor someone who wants a Rolex\nRolex Explorer 36 in Oystersteel and yellow gold\n\nWaiting times have gone way down on Rolexes in the US since the height of the pandemic insanity, and now you can hope to get an Oyster Perpetual or Datejust in a few weeks. Since two-tone watches are on trend right now, the Explorer is the model I’d go for. At 36mm, it’s on the smaller side, suitable for a wide array of wrists, and the big numerals and batons have a long-lasting glow in the dark. US$13,200\nFor someone who wants anything but a Rolex\nVacheron Constantin Moonphase Retrograde Date\n\nDid you know that the average first-time buyer of a Vacheron Constantin already owns eight timepieces? These are serious watches for serious watch people. The Overseas is the signature sports watch of the brand, the way the Royal Oak is for Audemars Piguet and the Nautilus is for Patek Philippe, the other two members of the “Holy Trinity” of Swiss watchmaking. When I first saw this moonphase watch, with its cool retrograde date hand and electric blue dial in 2023, I fell in love. But anything in the Overseas collection is a winner and will stand out in a sea of Submariners. US$51,000\nFor a woman who wants an understated classic\nCartier Tank Must Solarbeat\n\nIf you are buying a woman an expensive watch as a gift and you’re not at least considering Cartier, you’re doing it wrong. I’ve consulted many, many husbands buying watches for their wives, and the vast majority end up getting Tanks. The wives are happy and wear them forever, glad to never have to make a decision about a watch ever again. This small model has an innovative quartz movement that also absorbs natural and artificial light through tiny perforations in the dial, which charges the battery and allows the watch to run for about 16 years without being serviced. US$4,000\nFor a would-be groom who wants to propose to his boyfriend with a watch\nOmega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional\n\nA Rolex Datejust or a Cartier Santos are no-brainers here and both are popular choices. But I like to steer people toward Omega, one of the world’s greatest watch brands, and specifically to a Speedmaster Moonwatch. It’s the watch that went to the moon, after all, and how romantic to tell your partner you’d go there and back for them. It looks equally perfect with a wedding suit and next to the steering wheel of a rented convertible during the honeymoon. James Bond wears an Omega, as do many Olympians. Marriage is one of the hardest, most thrilling things a person will ever do. Omega is the perfect fit. US$8,600\nFor someone who wants something that stands out\nDennison Natural Stone Lapis Lazuli in gold\n\nOn a recent flight back from Switzerland I spied a couple wearing a matching pair of Dennisons with different stone dials and I thought it was the chicest thing. The designers of this new brand brought their experience from Rolex and Audemars Piguet to the table, and the result is a simple quartz watch that will always turn heads. I’ve recommended this brand to watch newbies and long-time design aficionados alike. US$690\nFor grandma\nCoach Arden\n\nLet’s be honest: at a certain point, we’re all going to want a watch with a large font and an ample, easily readable dial. There are probably a lot of folks in your life looking for a watch that’s functional, nice looking and inexpensive enough that they never have to worry about it. Citizen and Fossil make plenty of these, and I’ve found that Movado has great options. I recommend this Coach-branded one for its handsome design and three-year warranty. US$159\n</div>
