Lin Junyang's experience is a microcosm of the younger generation of technologists in China's AI wave.
Born in 1993, he is only 32 years old this year, yet he is already Alibaba's youngest P10-level technical executive. In the fiercely competitive large model arena, he is a key driver of the Tongyi Qianwen series of open-source large models and a highly representative composite talent in the industry.

He majored in computer science during his undergraduate studies at Peking University, but surprisingly chose to study foreign linguistics and applied linguistics for his master's degree. This interdisciplinary academic training laid the groundwork for his understanding of the underlying logic of large models, allowing him to accumulate a deeper foundation in the direction of machine understanding of human language and intent
This interdisciplinary academic training was by no means a detour. During his university years, he conducted tests using a German-English vocabulary database containing over 3 million samples and found that the accuracy of normal machine translation was only about 23%, while early versions of the Transformer could reach 27%. This seemingly insignificant data comparison allowed him to keenly capture the explosive potential of large models in the future.
After graduating in 2019, Lin Junyang directly joined Alibaba's DAMO Academy Intelligent Computing Lab, starting as a senior algorithm engineer, officially stepping into the forefront of AI.

Behind this exceptional promotion lies not only his strong technical capabilities but also reflects the fierce talent competition among major companies.
In August 2024, after Zhou Chang, the former head of Tongyi Qianwen, left to join ByteDance, Alibaba conducted a general adjustment for core department employees, allowing Lin Junyang to rise to P9. Around May of last year, he once again advanced to P10 due to the outstanding results achieved by his team. This rapid promotion, breaking the traditional seniority system, is enough to illustrate the weight of the younger generation on the AI battlefield.
In terms of technology implementation, Lin Junyang has made very solid strides. In his early years at DAMO Academy, he was a core member of the M6 multimodal model team, leading the team to tackle the challenges of model training efficiency, pushing the parameter scale to the trillion level.
At the end of 2022, he officially took over the Tongyi Qianwen series of large models, taking on the banner of technical leader. Under his leadership, Alibaba launched the Qwen open-source model family, covering various parameter scales, truly transforming Alibaba's AI technology into a flourishing ecosystem in the industry.
What draws more attention is his judgment on the future of AI. In October 2025, Lin Junyang personally established a robotics and embodied intelligence group within Qwen. In addition to expanding in engineering and business, Lin Junyang also has a solid foundation in academia. According to Google Scholar statistics, the total citation count of the papers he has co-authored has exceeded 42,000.
