Once considered a distant plan, the 6G frequency spectrum layout has now been brought to the brink of commercialization by Huawei.
At the 2026 Mobile World Congress (MWC), Huawei launched the U6GHz full-scenario product series, covering a complete matrix of macro stations, small stations, and microwave, claiming to &#34;solve the current capacity challenges of 5G-A while supporting a smooth evolution towards 6G.&#34;
Huawei has also clarified its timeline: in 2026, Huawei will release a 5G-A full-scenario solution that includes U6GHz and plans to fully support operators in completing U6GHz large-scale network deployment by 2028.
Yang Chaobin, CEO of Huawei's ICT BG, presented a set of data on March 3 local time: the global daily Token consumption has increased nearly 300 times over the past two years, with over 30 million AI Agents deeply integrated into various industries. Based on this, his conclusion is straightforward—existing networks cannot handle it anymore.
AI multimodal interaction has caused upstream demand to surge by 3 to 5 times, and real-time decision-making relies on millisecond-level low latency, requiring networks to have ultra-large bandwidth and deterministic assurance capabilities for both upstream and downstream.
Over the past year, 5G-A and AI applications have entered a new stage of large-scale development, with major telecom operators actively exploring the commercial value of multiple scenarios.
Yang Chaobin revealed that the first 3GPP standard version for 6G will not be frozen before March 2029. &#34;But the wave of AI development will not wait.&#34; He predicts that the next five years will be a critical window for the explosion of mobile AI business, and 5G-A, with its tenfold speed enhancement capability, is the only technical choice that can meet this wave of demand.
A spectrum positioning battle has officially begun.
Currently, more than 20 countries worldwide plan to use U6GHz for mobile communications, ZTE has also showcased a 6G prototype system during the same period, and Ericsson has completed Pre-6G interoperability debugging with MediaTek. Industry consensus is rapidly forming.
Whether a single frequency can simultaneously leverage 5G-A revenue growth and 6G evolution, Huawei will have more actions to take next.
The AI Turn in Communications
Zhao Dong, Vice President of Huawei's Wireless Product Line, shared a story.
During the Spring Festival, a certain art museum in Shanghai introduced AI intelligent guide agents, with over 3,000 daily users, and the upstream traffic ratio reached 63% for the first time—this number is usually less than 10% in traditional scenarios.
Zhao Dong calculated: &#34;If 10 people use the intelligent agent for exhibit explanations simultaneously, each user would need an upstream rate of over 20M. Even in China, where coverage is already so good, sometimes the upstream rate is only two or three megabits.&#34;
This is just one art museum. When the 30 million AI Agents mentioned by Yang Chaobin spread to factories, hospitals, and transportation hubs, the network will face completely different levels of pressure.
The ICT infrastructure business has always been Huawei's ballast, but this largest segment is currently undergoing a cyclical shift.
In the first half of 2025, the capital expenditures of China's three major operators decreased by 9%, 28%, and 15% year-on-year, respectively. Huawei's ICT infrastructure business is projected to generate revenue of 369.9 billion yuan in 2024, with a year-on-year growth of only 4.9%
Meng Wanzhou described this sector in her 2024 annual report speech as &#34;connecting industries to overcome the low point of industry investment cycles.&#34;
Operators are tightening their wallets, but the demand for AI in networks is exploding. This misalignment is precisely the logical starting point for Huawei's bet on U6GHz.
The core product released by Huawei this time is the 256-channel AAU, which integrates over 1,500 antenna arrays, expanding the 5G bandwidth from 100MHz to 400MHz. A Huawei technician admitted to Wall Street Insights, &#34;Stuffing in 1,536 antenna arrays, considering engineering implementation and capacity, the 256-channel is unique in the industry.&#34;
The loneliness of being a first mover is also the barrier of being a first mover.
Zhao Dong stated that last year Huawei focused on &#34;AI For Network,&#34; using AI to enhance network efficiency; this year it has reversed to &#34;Network For AI,&#34; allowing the network to serve intelligent agents. The achievements of last year have already been realized— in a certain province in China, the AI For Network solution reduced fault recovery time by 27%, and traffic in dense scenarios increased by over 10%. &#34;Since this path has been proven, I firmly believe that the Agentverse concept proposed today can help operators achieve significant revenue growth in the near future.&#34;
To catch the wave of AI described by Yang Chaobin, Huawei proposed the Agentic MBB solution, which focuses on shifting the network from &#34;behavior-driven&#34; to &#34;balanced up and down,&#34; from &#34;best effort&#34; to &#34;guaranteed experience.&#34;
Zhao Dong also disclosed for the first time the experience scoring standard AI MOS aimed at intelligent agents, which is being promoted for ITU standardization. At the same time, Huawei, in collaboration with TM Forum, released the A2A-T interface—customized enhancements for the telecommunications industry based on Google's A2A framework, &#34;We hope the entire industry can work together and avoid redundant innovation.&#34;
In terms of business models, Huawei Senior Vice President Li Peng provided data showing that over 30 operators worldwide have launched experience packages. In China, the number of users for the 5G-A main package exceeds 4 million, with an average ARPU increase of 8.5 yuan. Zhao Dong predicts that future revenue growth for operators will come from traffic growth brought by intelligent agents, tariff upgrades from experience guarantees, and an increase in the number of connections serving various industries.
&#34;If we introduce this spectrum for construction at this stage, it can meet current needs, future demands for 6G evolution, and achieve investment protection,&#34; Zhao Dong said, &#34;I think, why not?&#34;
Five-Year Assault on Smart Networks
Yang Chaobin's &#34;five-year window&#34; judgment means that Huawei needs to push U6GHz from concept to large-scale commercial use before the 6G standards are frozen in 2029. The variables in between include both tailwinds and headwinds.
The tailwinds are clear: a global consensus on spectrum policy is accelerating.
The US FCC is making a significant shift by the end of 2025—from previously allocating the entire 6GHz band to WiFi to planning to auction the upper band for 5G/6G. In Europe, according to Communications World Network, 11 operators including Vodafone, BT, and Orange have jointly requested that the upper band be allocated for mobile communications
Currently, more than 20 countries have planned to use U6GHz for mobile communications. Using the upper 700MHz for mobile communications and the lower 500MHz for WiFi is becoming the global mainstream practice.
The industrial ecosystem is also maturing simultaneously. Data obtained by Wall Street Insight shows that 374 operators worldwide have deployed 5G networks, with 70 million 5G-A users. In the Chinese market alone, there are over 135 models of smartphones supporting 5G-A, with shipments exceeding 170 million. CPE terminals for U6GHz have already been launched, and markets like the UAE have completed end-to-end testing and verification.
However, there are also variables, one of which is the competition over technical routes.
Huawei is pursuing the &#34;RF hardware limit&#34; route, while NVIDIA, in collaboration with Nokia, is taking the &#34;computing power takes over the network&#34; route—during a demonstration between Nokia and SoftBank, the base station can run third-party AI tasks during idle periods, directly opening up a new business path of &#34;selling computing power.&#34;
The OCUDU ecosystem foundation established by the Linux Foundation aims to reduce dependence on a single vendor by open-sourcing base station baseband code. Each of these three routes represents different industrial interests and is attractive to operators.
However, Zhao Dong stated, &#34;Commercial success and network evolution are not contradictory; they promote each other.&#34; His strategy is to organically combine the evolution of existing spectrum with the construction of new spectrum, helping operators reduce costs while opening up revenue opportunities.
Currently, Huawei's performance has entered a growth bottleneck period. Data shows that Huawei's total revenue for 2025 is expected to exceed 880 billion yuan, with a growth rate of 2.2%.
This is Huawei's consistent style: the more the industry is in a period of adjustment, the more it increases investment.
Zhao Dong believes, &#34;Our wireless industry only sees half a generational iteration every five years, but in the era of AI and intelligent agents, changes occur every six months. Time waits for no one.&#34;
It can be seen that the 300-fold increase in token consumption and the influx of 30 million AI agents are pushing the communications industry toward a question that must be answered: who will repair this new highway? Huawei has provided its solution—using U6GHz to catch the AI tide and using 5G-A to bridge the five-year window before the arrival of 6G.
Leveraging the global deployment experience and industrial chain integration capabilities accumulated from the large-scale commercial use of 5G, Huawei has already taken the lead in this race.
The next challenge is whether it can convert its first-mover advantage into industry standards and commercial implementation, making operators willing to invest in the next-generation network during the cyclical downturn—this is the most critical battle for the communications industry in the next five years
