# Solid-State Battery Commercialization Signals Sent by Government and Industry Backing

Recent moves by the U.S. government and major automakers are flagging a clear shift: the commercialization of next-generation battery technology is securing substantive policy and industrial backing. From the U.S. Department of Energy's reinstatement of funding for critical mineral refining to traditional auto giants advancing solid-state battery field tests, institutional players appear set to pave the way for the sector to move past the prototype phase.

The Department of Energy's recent decision is particularly notable. On June 8, 2026, the agency announced the full reinstatement of a USD 115M competitive grant for a domestic lithium project. Translation: policymakers are increasingly open to heavily subsidizing the domestic supply chain for new energy vehicles, providing crucial financial endorsements for companies navigating technical bottlenecks.

**QuantumScape (QS.US)**

QuantumScape is currently navigating the transition from prototype development to commercial production. The company focuses on developing solid-state lithium-metal batteries featuring an anode-free architecture and a proprietary solid ceramic separator. Recently, QuantumScape signed a milestone agreement with Volkswagen's battery unit, PowerCo, to push for the industrialization of its technology, and successfully completed a field demonstration of its cells in a Ducati motorcycle. In February 2026, the company launched its Eagle Line pilot facility to produce higher volumes of "B-sample" cells. While QuantumScape initially planned to commercialize its first batteries in 2024—a milestone not yet achieved—analysts project that if current plans proceed smoothly, revenue could grow from zero in 2026 to USD 51.2M in 2027 and USD 98.6M in 2028. It is also worth noting that the company recently transferred the listing of its Class A common stock to the Nasdaq.

**American Battery Technology Co (ABAT.US)**

On the supply chain side, American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) has secured explicit policy support. The DOE reinstated a USD 115M grant—previously canceled in October—to support the construction of Phase 1 of the Tonopah Flats commercial-scale lithium refinery in Nevada. Under the agreement, the company will provide a matching amount. The first phase targets a production capacity of 5,000 tons of battery-grade lithium hydroxide annually, with an estimated production cost of USD 4,307 per ton. Financially, the company achieved record revenue and its first-ever positive gross margin in Q3 of fiscal 2026. Despite these developments, market sentiment appears cautious; the stock remains below its 52-week high of USD 11.49, suggesting that investors are leaving the door open to potential delays before capacity fully materializes.

Market participants remain divided on the sector's immediate trajectory. While some analysts have issued price targets pointing to significant upside potential, recent executive stock sales by QuantumScape's CTO and CFO between May and June 2026 indicate a more complex picture. If capital requirements continue to rise, officials and companies could face further challenges in scaling up. The next key node will be whether these firms can deliver economically viable production batches in the coming quarters.
