What's Driving the Optimism? Shares of IonQ (IONQ), Rigetti Computing (RGTI), D-Wave Quantum (QBTS), and Quantum Computing (QUBT) rose more than 3% in pre-market trading on Thursday. The rally follows new comments from a top executive at Amazon (AMZN). Peter DeSantis, Amazon's head of AI models, chips, and quantum computing, told *CNBC* that the first "commercially useful" quantum computers could arrive within the next five to seven years. ### Claim 55% Off TipRanks 200% short exposure to AMZN with AMZO The comments gave investors a new reason to bet on the sector. Quantum stocks often react strongly when major tech firms signal progress in the field. The sector has also received support from Washington. Last month, the Trump administration said it will invest $2 billion in nine quantum computing companies and will receive equity stakes in them. The government aims to strengthen the U.S. quantum supply chain and compete more directly with China. ## **Amazon Is Not Alone in the Quantum Race** Amazon is one of several tech giants investing heavily in quantum computing. Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet's Google (GOOG), and IBM (IBM) are all racing to build more powerful quantum systems. Microsoft has said it expects a commercially viable quantum computer by 2029, while Google and IBM continue to roll out new chips and expand their quantum research efforts.
