The first batch of Chongqing Beer cans rolled off the production line at Carlsberg Malaysia Brewery’s factory in Shah Alam, near Kuala Lumpur, last month, and they were available for purchase at 99 Speedmart, the country’s largest convenience store chain, around June 23, according to Chongqing Daily. The Chongqing Beer product on sale in Malaysia has a 3.8 percent alcohol content, lower than the average 5 percent of local mainstream beer products. This is to cater to the new consumption trend led by young people who believe that low alcohol content is healthier and fresher, Stefano Clini, managing director of Carlsberg Malaysia, told Yicai. Foreign beers imported to Malaysia face both import tariffs and consumption taxes, which is the reason why most beer brands in the country are produced domestically, Clini said, adding that after being brewed and produced in Malaysia, Chongqing Beer will obtain a competitive advantage over imported brands. Malaysian customers are more loyal to well-known brands, but they are also willing to accept novelty and innovation, Clini pointed out. The main task of Chongqing Beer is to reach as many local customers as possible to enhance its brand awareness, and Carlsberg Malaysia will help with it, he added. Chongqing Beer will take full advantage of Carlsberg’s supply chain, mature production line, and market operating system in Malaysia, having operated there for 55 years. Malaysia was also the first Southeast Asian country into which Carlsberg forayed. “Carlsberg has been deeply rooted in Malaysia for many years and has established a solid brand influence among the local Chinese community, which has become a favorable condition for Chongqing Beer to enter the country,” Xiao Zhuqing, a Chinese liquor industry insider, told Yicai. Xiao believes that Chongqing Beer can rely on Carlsberg’s mature factories, omni-channel distribution, and local compliance qualifications in Malaysia to quickly enter the local market with low risk, thus avoiding the long cycle required for building factories and possible policy barriers. This is a milestone for Chinese beer brands’ culture-based expansion overseas, which will help change the traditional business pattern of Chinese beer products relying on foreign dealers for a long time, having no say in overseas markets, and relying on low-priced original equipment manufacturing to go global, Xiao noted. Carlsberg acquired its first stake in Chongqing Brewery in 2008 and became its controlling shareholder with a 60 percent stake five years later. After an asset restructuring in 2020, the majority of the two firms’ brewery assets in China were transferred to their joint venture, Carlsberg Chongqing Brewery, with Chongqing Brewery holding a 51 percent stake and Carlsberg indirectly holding the remaining 49 percent stake.
