# AI | Samsung Electronics' second-quarter profit soared 19 times, with sales exceeding expectations

\[Hong Kong Economic Journal\] South Korea's Samsung Electronics announced that for the second quarter from April to June, it recorded an operating profit of 89.4 trillion Korean won (approximately USD 58 billion), a staggering increase of 19 times year-on-year, setting a new historical high for the company and significantly exceeding analysts' average expectations of 84.2 trillion Korean won, also surpassing the full-year performance for 2025.

During this period, operating revenue reported was 171 trillion Korean won, higher than the market estimate of 169.2 trillion Korean won, with a year-on-year growth rate of 1.3 times, indicating an explosive growth in demand for memory chips driven by artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.

AI memory chip demand exceeds expectations

Analysts pointed out that Samsung's quarterly performance exceeded expectations, alleviating market concerns about a slowdown in AI corporate investments that could drag down the super cycle of memory chips. Earlier, Meta announced plans to sell AI computing power, raising market concerns about overcapacity, which led to a significant drop in chip stocks.

Samsung's soaring performance is directly benefiting from the worsening market situation of memory chip shortages. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, and Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI, among other tech industry leaders, have stated that the memory chip shortage has become a core bottleneck for AI development. Analysts expect that the supply tightness will last at least until 2027, which gives Samsung and its competitors, SK Hynix and Micron Technology, strong bargaining power.

Samsung is expected to release a complete performance report at the end of this month, including net profit and detailed data by business segment
