# Forget the tech buzz—the real market drama is in gold, planes, and teeth

Look, if you want to understand what's actually moving the needle in 2026, you have to look past the usual tech suspects. Take China Eastern Airlines (0670.HK). They just dropped over USD 9.35 billion on 25 Airbus A330neos this July. That is a massive flex, especially after they quietly canned a dozen Japan routes due to geopolitical friction. It’s all about shifting power dynamics. Speaking of aggressive expansion, look at Zhaojin Mining (1818.HK). They are practically digging up Africa looking for new gold assets, with their Abujar mine expected to pump out up to 5 tons this year alone. When the big players want resources, they don't wait around.

Then there’s the consumer and health side, which is its own kind of weird right now. People are still spending on themselves, but companies are ruthlessly optimizing. Modern Dental Group (3600.HK) is throwing off serious cash—they saw net profits spike nearly 48% in 2025, and their mainland China business finally turned around in early 2026. They even launched a massive 10% stock buyback. Clearly, someone is feeling confident. The same goes for Yonghe Medical (6951.HK). The hair transplant giant managed to flip from a brutal 2023 loss into a slight 2025 profit, though their CEO openly admits the revenue mix is shifting away from pure surgery. And in the hardcore pharma space, Hansoh Pharmaceutical (3692.HK) is aggressively pushing forward, scoring breakthrough designations for lung cancer drugs and filing new applications by mid-2026.

But let’s not pretend everything is booming. CK Hutchison (0001.HK) is busy trimming the fat, looking to offload the European beauty retailer Marionnaud this summer while managing complex telecom stakes in the UK. It’s classic corporate consolidation. On the food side, Food Empire Holdings (8400.HK) had to sell off a chunk of treasury shares to institutions just to bulk up working capital. And then you have the telecom behemoth China Mobile (0941.HK) and the much smaller Chaowei Holdings (8090.HK), both of which have been dead silent lately. In a market this volatile, sometimes no news just means they are riding out the broader weirdness.

And of course, there are the inevitable casualties. If you want a stark reminder of the real estate bloodbath, look no further than Dexin China (0179.HK). After dealing with relentless liquidation petitions, they were finally booted off the Hong Kong exchange in January 2026. It’s a harsh market out there. You either adapt and spend strategically, or you get shown the door.
