In a recent report, it was highlighted that the global carbon emissions have reached a record high of 40.9 billion tons in 2020, despite a brief decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study showed that there was a 5.4% increase in emissions compared to the previous year, which is the largest annual rise ever recorded. The data also revealed that China was the largest contributor to this surge, accounting for 27% of the global emissions, followed by the United States with 11% and India with 6.6%. This increase in carbon emissions is concerning as it goes against efforts to combat climate change and calls for urgent actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
