Upon completion, the facility will house 31 battery testing laboratories, a pilot line for lithium-ion cells, and a production line for battery packs. The focus will be on researching and developing next-generation battery technologies. With this project, Nio aims to further expand its existing location strategy. While vehicle production is primarily based in Anhui province, the company has concentrated its research and development activities in Shanghai for over a decade. Nio already operates several development and testing centres in the city, covering a total area of more than 60,000 sq. metres. The new battery centre will complement these activities in the future. According to Chinese media reports, the facility will also focus on solid-state batteries. Nio, in collaboration with industry partners and research institutions, is exploring various technological approaches, including solid-state batteries with oxide and sulphide electrolytes. The new research centre aligns with Nio’s battery offensive announced earlier this year. In March, the company founded the subsidiary Nio Battery Technology to consolidate the development of solid-state batteries in Shanghai. At the time, Nio announced its intention to bring these technologies to mass-production maturity on a larger scale after 2027 and to integrate them into its electric vehicles from 2028 onwards. The new development centre will support this strategy by providing additional research and testing infrastructure. In recent years, Nio has fundamentally reorganised its battery activities. At the end of 2023, it was revealed that the company planned to outsource its battery production for cost reasons and focus more on development. Consequently, Nio expanded its collaboration with suppliers.
