Volex plc’s latest earnings call struck an upbeat tone as management outlined record financial results and a bolder strategic horizon. The company delivered double‑digit organic growth, expanded margins beyond guidance, and sharply improved returns and leverage, while openly acknowledging pockets of weakness in Consumer Electricals and Medical and the risks tied to data‑center customer concentration.

## Record Revenue and Early Completion of Five-Year Plan

Volex reported revenue of $1.243 billion, up 14.4% year on year, with organic growth of 14.2%. This performance means the group has delivered its five‑year plan a full year early, surpassing its $1.2 billion revenue target and underlining the strength of demand across its key end markets.

## Margin Expansion and Profitability Improvement

Underlying operating profit rose to $127.3 million, an increase of about 20% compared with the prior year. The underlying operating margin improved to 10.2% from 9.8%, taking the group above its previous guidance range of 9% to 10% and showcasing disciplined cost control and mix improvements.

## Higher Returns and Earnings Power

Return on capital employed climbed to 21%, highlighting improved efficiency in turning invested capital into profit. Underlying basic earnings per share reached $0.435, up 20% year on year, reinforcing the message that shareholders are seeing meaningful earnings growth alongside the top‑line expansion.

## Robust Cash Generation and EBITDA Growth

Underlying EBITDA increased 22% to $164 million, providing a solid earnings base to fund growth. Underlying free cash flow was $42 million, broadly in line with the prior year, and pre‑capex cash conversion remained strong at over 90%, underscoring the underlying cash generative nature of the business.

## Complex Industrial and Data Centers Drive Outperformance

Complex Industrial Technology revenue grew organically by 56.3% to $382.9 million, making it a standout performer. Within this segment, data‑center revenue doubled year on year, with management noting that demand has remained strong into the first quarter of FY 2027, driven by hyperscale and AI‑related infrastructure needs.

## Off-Highway Momentum and EV Progress

Off‑Highway revenue grew organically by 20% to $279.3 million, supported by defense program wins and ramp‑ups in North America. EV and Electrification posted 4.8% organic growth to $181.8 million, aided by new integrated charging programs and early traction in adjacent markets such as energy storage, signaling a diversified electrification strategy.

## Financial Discipline and Strengthened Capital Position

Volex kept capital expenditure to $35 million, equivalent to 2.8% of revenue, in line with its investment discipline. Covenant leverage fell to 0.8 times from 1.0 times, giving the company greater balance‑sheet headroom to fund organic growth, pursue selective acquisitions, maintain a progressive dividend and support share buybacks for employee incentives.

## New Medium-Term Targets for Scale and Margin

Management set a new medium‑term plan targeting approximately $2 billion of revenue and a 12% underlying operating margin. The roadmap assumes around $500 million of organic growth complemented by about $300 million from capability‑led acquisitions, implying roughly 200 basis points of margin expansion from the current 10.2% level.

## Customer Concentration Risk in Data Centers

The company acknowledged that a material portion of its data‑center growth is currently tied to a single hyperscale customer, creating concentration risk. While Volex stressed that it has diversified beyond its two largest customers and that no other customer accounts for more than around 4% of revenue, investors will be watching how quickly the data‑center book broadens.

## Consumer Electricals Under Pressure

Consumer Electricals revenue declined organically by 7.8% to $242.4 million, highlighting a drag within the portfolio. Management attributed the weakness to intensified competition from Chinese suppliers in European markets and the impact of tariffs shifting import patterns, which together have pressured volumes and pricing.

## Medical Segment Hit by Destocking

Medical revenue fell 10.5% organically to $156.2 million as customers worked through elevated inventories. The destocking was anticipated as channels realigned to end‑user demand, and Volex framed the decline as cyclical rather than structural, but it nonetheless weighed on overall growth in the period.

## Working Capital Build Weighs on Cash Conversion

Inventory levels rose as Volex supported the rapid ramp‑up in data‑center projects and managed customer relocations, which in turn reduced reported cash conversion to 63.9%. Management emphasized that pre‑capex conversion remained above 90% and framed the working‑capital increase as a necessary investment to sustain growth and customer commitments.

## Inflation, Freight and FX Headwinds

Cost pressures were most pronounced in Türkiye, though the company said these were largely offset through operational efficiencies and pass‑through mechanisms with customers. Rising freight costs, driven by higher oil prices, and a modestly adverse foreign exchange movement created additional headwinds, but did not derail the overall margin expansion.

## Listing Transition and M&A Market Risks

Management addressed share‑price weakness following results, pointing to a broader sell‑off in U.S. technology names, conservative guidance for Complex Industrial and residual selling tied to the move from AIM to the Main market. They also noted that acquisition valuations have risen and that Volex has not closed a deal in roughly three years, stressing that this reflects strict selectivity in a competitive M&A landscape.

## Forward Guidance and Strategic Outlook

Looking ahead, Volex reaffirmed its medium‑term goal of reaching $2.0 billion in revenue at a 12% underlying operating margin, implying around $240 million in underlying operating profit. Near term, management said trading into FY 2027 is strong and in line with expectations, data‑center demand has remained robust into the first quarter, Medical is expected to stabilise, and further margin gains should come from site rationalisation and centres of excellence.

Volex’s earnings call painted a picture of a company riding powerful secular trends in industrial technology and data‑center infrastructure while keeping a tight grip on margins, returns and capital. Investors will need to balance the impressive growth, strong balance sheet and clear medium‑term roadmap against customer concentration, segmental softness and M&A execution risk, but the overall trajectory remains clearly positive.
