# U.S. stock market trends | NASDAQ closed up 0.62%, Dow Jones rose by 150 points

The performance of lithography machine giant ASML confirms that the investment frenzy in artificial intelligence (AI) continues, failing to support chip stocks. However, traditional large tech stocks are favored, and the latest data shows that inflationary pressures in the U.S. are milder than market expectations, leading to a rebound in U.S. stocks on Wednesday. The Dow opened up 95 points, with the gain at one point expanding to 315 points, reaching a high of 52,823 points, before gently retreating by 79 points to a low of 52,428 points, mainly dragged down by the news that SpaceX fell below the IPO issuance price of $135 for the first time. The S&P 500 rose by as much as 0.5%, while the tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite Index surged 0.8% at one point. The U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) for June unexpectedly slowed to a year-on-year increase of 5.5%, down from 6% in May.

**Buffett Leads Berkshire's Investment in Alphabet**

Chip giant Nvidia's stock price fell by as much as 2.7% but closed up 0.3%. Intel dropped 4.4%, and Micron fell 8%. Among other tech stocks, Apple and Microsoft rose 4% and 2.8%, respectively, while Alphabet increased by 3.2%, and Amazon climbed 3%. Computer manufacturer Dell fell 9.9%. Some stocks showed mixed performance after earnings announcements; Morgan Stanley's stock trading revenue exceeded expectations last quarter, with shares rising 0.3%; BlackRock's assets under management surpassed $15 trillion for the first time last quarter, with shares soaring 6.6%; Johnson & Johnson's medical device sales performed poorly last quarter, with shares dropping 2.7%. SpaceX closed down 0.6% at $135.27, having dipped to a low of $132.15 during the day, a decline of 2.9%.

Investment guru Buffett revealed in an interview with CNBC that he personally led Berkshire's investment in Alphabet, indicating his support for the latter's strategy to increase AI spending. He candidly stated that in the past, while Alphabet was still in a light-asset operating model and was favored by the market, he missed investment opportunities, which he considers his mistake. Buffett also mentioned that his successor, current Berkshire CEO Greg Abel, would not make any significant decisions without his consent.

At the close of U.S. markets, the Dow reported 52,658 points, up 150 points; the S&P 500 rose 0.38%; and the NASDAQ increased by 0.62%. European stock markets showed mixed developments, with the UK and German markets falling 0.13% and 0.59%, respectively, while the French market rose 0.19%.

The U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) for June unexpectedly slowed to a year-on-year increase of 5.5%, down from 6% in May, with the market originally expecting 6.2%; on a monthly basis, it fell by 0.3%, contrary to expectations of remaining unchanged. The core PPI, excluding food and energy, rose by 4.7% year-on-year, lower than the expected 5.1%; on a monthly basis, it increased by 0.2%, also below the expected rise of 0.3%. The New York Manufacturing Index for July jumped to 15.6 from 5.7 in June, far exceeding the expected 9.2 The swap market shows that the probability of the Federal Reserve raising interest rates in July has dropped from nearly 50% recently to about 12%. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury bond fell by 4.9 basis points to 4.536%; the yield on the 2-year Treasury bond, which is sensitive to interest rates, fell by 7.1 basis points to 4.122%.

Federal Reserve Chairman John Williams testified before the Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday, mentioning that the price impacts driven by AI may not necessarily have inflationary effects, and noted that AI investments are beneficial for employment in the short term. On the same day, New York Federal Reserve Bank President John Williams stated that current interest rates are in a good position to lead inflation back to the authorities' 2% target. Inflation is undoubtedly still too high, but there are some encouraging signs indicating that inflation may have peaked and should gradually decline over the next few quarters
