# Divergence in US Financials: Wall Street Titans Surge While Credit Vehicles Feel the Squeeze

The mid-2026 financial landscape is presenting a stark bifurcation: Wall Street behemoths and global exchange operators are posting commanding performances, while the specialized credit vehicles that lubricate the middle market are increasingly showing signs of strain.

Against the backdrop of persistent policy ambiguity from central banks and shifting cross-border capital flows, investors are crowding into liquidity and scale. The downside risks to this "higher-for-longer" environment are finally materializing in the more vulnerable pockets of the credit and mortgage sectors.

The gravitational pull of mega-cap institutions is unmistakable. Goldman Sachs Group (GS-A.US) recently delivered blistering second-quarter results, churning out an EPS of **USD 20.98** and a formidable annualized ROE of **23.5%**. Its Outsourced Chief Investment Officer arm also cemented its dominance by securing a massive **USD 70 billion** mandate from heavyweights like Verizon. Similarly capturing this macro volatility, Intercontinental Exchange Inc (ICE.US) reported a **20%** year-over-year surge in Q2 open interest, with its North American financial natural gas futures hitting a record **13.4 million** contracts—a clear reflection of robust global hedging appetite.

Straddling the line of risk management, Arch Capital Group (ACGL.US) has showcased defensive resilience. The specialty insurer raked in **USD 1 billion** in net income for the first quarter, backed by a robust **17.8%** ROE. Amidst a broader M&A revival, the firm recently launched a US transaction liability team and executed **USD 783 million** in share repurchases to buffer against external shocks.

Yet, the cracks are widening within the private debt sphere. Blackstone Secured Lending Fund (BXSL.US) serves as a cautionary tale; while it managed to cover its dividend with **USD 0.77** in net investment income per share, its non-accrual investments spiked from **0.6%** to **4.7%**, prompting rating outlook downgrades and spotlighting the vulnerability of middle-market borrowers under sustained rate pressures. In contrast, sector peer Ares Capital Corp (ARCC.US) has proactively fortified its balance sheet, recently launching a **USD 1 billion** commercial paper program to ensure deep liquidity as it navigates an increasingly treacherous credit cycle.

The pressure is equally acute in the mortgage REIT space. AGNC Investment Corp (AGNC.US) has fought to maintain its **USD 0.12** monthly dividend payout, appealing to yield-hungry investors. However, a **5.6%** sequential decline in its Q1 tangible net book value and a stretched payout ratio of **114.7%** highlight the severe margin compression facing mortgage-backed securities as interest rate volatility persists.

As market participants brace for the remainder of the July earnings season, the focus will undoubtedly shift to central bank commentary. If policymakers leave the door open to prolonged restrictive rates, it could further expose the underlying rot in credit markets, defining the next major pivot in global capital allocation.
