# Meta Secures First Major Customer for Compute Monetization: Report Says It Plans to Lease Compute Power to Anthropic in a Deal Worth Up to $10 Billion

According to The New York Times, Meta is in preliminary negotiations with Anthropic PBC to lease computing power from its data centers. If this partnership is finalized, the two-year contract could be worth up to $10 billion.

As previously reported by Wallstreetcn, Meta is discussing the establishment of a new cloud computing business, potentially selling its surplus AI compute capacity directly to external customers. Additionally, the company is considering selling access to AI models deployed on its own infrastructure, a business model similar to Amazon Web Services' (AWS) Bedrock service.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in a previous interview that the company currently allocates almost all of its computing power to internal projects. However, the high-priced demand for compute power in the market is prompting him to reconsider leasing out a portion of it externally.

Meanwhile, Anthropic has been actively procuring external computing resources. In May this year, the company announced an agreement with SpaceX to pay nearly $45 billion over the next three years to access computing power across multiple data centers. In the same month, Anthropic also signed an $1.8 billion compute cooperation agreement with cloud service provider Akamai.

Boosted by this news, Meta's stock price, which had fallen nearly 6% during the session, quickly narrowed its losses and ultimately closed down 2.8%.

## Deal Structure: Two-Year Term, Monthly Payments, Exit Option—More Like an Option Than a Lease

The structure of this potential deal indicates that both parties are leaving room for uncertainty. The flexible arrangement of monthly payments and an early exit option means that the $10 billion figure is merely a theoretical maximum—the actual commitment is far lower than the headline number.

The transaction structure is similar to the agreement Anthropic signed with SpaceX in May of this year, which was a three-year deal totaling $45 billion. The emergence of these two ultra-large leasing negotiations in quick succession points to the same fundamental trend: the demand for computing power from leading AI model companies is undergoing explosive expansion.

For Meta, the low-barrier terms reduce negotiation friction for securing its first major customer. For Anthropic, this is equivalent to locking in an option in the compute market—retaining the right to use resources while maintaining the flexibility to adjust its position at any time.
