# Comcast Stock (NASDAQ:CMCSA) Gains as Netflix May Step In

Entertainment giant Comcast (CMCSA) may have a plan in the works to separate itself from NBCUniversal, a move which will allow it to better focus on its communications operations. The move is catching some attention already, and reports suggest that Comcast may have a buyer in mind: Netflix (NFLX). Such a move could shake up the entertainment landscape, but will Netflix bite? The move still captured investors' imaginations, and sent Comcast stock up fractionally in Monday morning's trading.

We all know that Netflix recently got rebuffed with its plan to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), a move that would have given Netflix access to multiple studios and a theatrical distribution system that it may or may not have wanted. But Netflix may get another chance if NBCUniversal goes up for sale, a move that would serve many of the same purposes that acquiring Warner would have.

A Comcast without NBCUniversal would be a fundamentally different animal, as it would no longer have most of the entertainment business to work with. It would basically be the communications business, which would leave it with a flagging linear cable arm, an internet arm which is increasingly under fire from competitors, and the mobile arm. This may leave it in a difficult position going forward, without the perennial value of NBCUniversal, the theme parks, and the intellectual property to keep it afloat.

## **Pressuring the Quarterback**

Meanwhile, we are about a third done with summer right now, and the NFL is already firing up training camps ahead of the first games in September. But Comcast is still trying to get the rights to broadcast NFL Network over its legacy cable arm, a move that may put further pressure on an already-stressed platform.

The battle continues, as Comcast asserts that current owner Disney (DIS) wants too much for carriage payments, while Disney's ESPN—which owns 72% of NFL Network at last report—asserts the exact opposite, that Comcast will not offer enough. The stakes are still comparatively low, as NFL Network does not have much original content to offer until football season begins in earnest. But with training camps starting, and viewers unable to see the practices themselves, the end result is a ticking clock for Comcast.

## **Is Comcast Stock a Good Buy Right Now?**

Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Moderate Buy consensus rating on CMCSA stock based on six Buys, 10 Holds, and one Sell assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 32.05% loss in its share price over the past year, the average CMCSA price target of $31.52 per share implies 32.06% upside potential.
