The report cited two people involved in the discussions as saying that regulators led by the Ministry of Commerce have been consulting major domestic AI and chipmakers on how to prevent China's advanced technologies and star startups from being acquired by the West. Most proposals are still under discussion, whereas regulators are looking at industry feedback before making final decisions, sources divulged. China's Ministry of Commerce reportedly discussed with AI companies including BABA-W (09988.HK) +1.100 (+0.942%) Short selling $1.93B; Ratio 25.792% , ByteDance and Z.AI (02513.HK) +304.500 (+34.194%) Short selling $366.25M; Ratio 5.069% restrictions on transferring overseas key data used for model training. However, China will still allow overseas customers to access these models and services. Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 model released last week outperformed Anthropic's flagship Opus 4.8 in most benchmark tests, showing that China has hugely narrowed the gap with the US in frontier AI development. Sources added that restrictions may also be imposed on overseas acquisitions involving strategic technology groups in areas such as generative AI (GenAI). This is mainly intended to address what Beijing views as a loophole that enabled Meta Platforms, Inc.
