# Google increases capital expenditure on artificial intelligence, raising market concerns as the high return on investment for tech giants faces scrutiny

As the American tech giant Google's parent company Alphabet further raises its capital expenditure budget for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, concerns in the capital markets about high investments eroding profitability and free cash flow have significantly increased, leading to stock price fluctuations.

Alphabet's latest financial report shows that the company's operating revenue and net profit both achieved strong growth in the quarter, with Google Cloud's revenue increasing by 82% year-on-year to $24.8 billion, indicating robust demand for AI infrastructure. However, the company announced another increase in its full-year capital expenditure forecast for 2026 to between $195 billion and $205 billion, with quarterly capital expenditure climbing to $44.9 billion, directly resulting in negative free cash flow.

In response to market doubts about return on investment, Google's CEO Sundar Pichai stated that AI-related investments are reshaping the company's entire business line. However, analysts pointed out that the tolerance of the U.S. secondary market for tech giants' model of "high spending for long-term share" is declining. Companies like Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, which are set to release financial reports next week, also face significant pressure from computing power expenditures, and the realization cycle of AI capital expenditures has become a major risk factor for Wall Street in assessing the valuation of the tech sector.

Additionally, European regulators recently imposed a $1 billion fine on Google for antitrust violations in its search business, and the increasing costs of geopolitical and regulatory compliance will pose multiple challenges to the global layout of tech giants
