This has positioned Apple as an 'anti-CapEx' alternative, given its minimal AI spending and strong shareholder returns via buybacks. With China approving Apple Intelligence, investors are watching Apple's upcoming earnings to see if its capital-light strategy can sustain growth against heavy spenders like Alphabet and Nvidia." datetime: "2026-07-24T14:47:54.000Z" locales: - [zh-CN](https://longbridge.com/zh-CN/news/293773432.md) - [en](https://longbridge.com/en/news/293773432.md) - [zh-HK](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/293773432.md) generator: "portal-rs" --- # Google Goes Cash Flow Negative for First Time Since 2004, Is Apple the Anti-CapEx AI Trade? **Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL)** burned more cash than it generated last quarter for the first time since its 2004 IPO, and Wall Street reacted by handing the stock its worst day in over a year. Google lost roughly the market cap of **Palantir** (NASDAQ:PLTR), despite Google Cloud revenue reportedly surging 82%, a sign of how spooked investors are by that negative $5.86 billion free cash flow figure. The sell-off may be pushing investors toward the one megacap that barely spends on AI at all: **Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)**, which reports Thursday on what is reportedly **Tim Cook**‘s final earnings call before handing the reins to **John Ternus**. ## Why Apple May Be the Anti-CapEx Trade Alphabet raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to as much as $205 billion, with quarterly capex of $44.9 billion reportedly exceeding its operating cash flow. Apple spent less than $2 billion over the same period, roughly 4% of Alphabet’s outlay. According to CNBC’s **Mackenzie Sigalos**, the stock gives investors “the most direct hedge against the hyperscaler spending binge.” The company outsources much of the expensive model layer, including a Gemini deal with Google, and leans on its roughly 2.5 billion active devices as the distribution point instead. The playbook just cleared one of its biggest tests. China’s cyberspace regulator approved Apple Intelligence for the mainland on July 15, powered by Alibaba’s Qwen model, letting Apple launch AI in the world’s largest smartphone market without spending billions training local models. That leaves cash for shareholders rather than data centers. Apple announced a fresh $100 billion buyback authorization in April, reportedly the same quarter Alphabet skipped repurchases for the first time in a decade. ## What Prediction Markets Are Watching Polymarket traders now give Apple a 20% chance of ending 2026 as the world’s largest company, on a market that has drawn nearly $4.7 million in volume. Apple briefly overtook Nvidia in market cap earlier in the month, before slipping back. Traders still make Nvidia the 66% favorite to hold the crown through Dec. 31, with Alphabet fading to 11%. ## Cook’s Last Test Analysts reportedly expect revenue near $108.8 billion and EPS of $1.88, against Apple’s own guidance of 14% to 17% growth. Apple trades near $328, within reach of its all-time high of $334.99. Whether a capital-light AI strategy can keep outrunning **Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA)** and the hyperscaler spending race may be answered after they release earnings next Thursday. **Read Also: Tesla Stock Erases $214 Billion in a Single Day — Here's What Happened This Month by Dylan Berman Benzinga Staff Writer Follow** *Image: Shutterstock* ### Related Stocks - [GOOG.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/GOOG.US.md) - [GOOGL.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/GOOGL.US.md) - [GGLL.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/GGLL.US.md) - [GGLS.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/GGLS.US.md) - [GOOW.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/GOOW.US.md) - [GOOY.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/GOOY.US.md) - [GOU.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/GOU.US.md) - [GOOX.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/GOOX.US.md) - [GOOP.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/GOOP.US.md) - [MAGX.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/MAGX.US.md) - [PLTR.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/PLTR.US.md) - [AAPL.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/AAPL.US.md) - [BABA.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BABA.US.md) - [09988.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/09988.HK.md) - [NVDA.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/NVDA.US.md) - [TSLA.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLA.US.md) - [89988.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/89988.HK.md) - [HBBD.SG](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/HBBD.SG.md) - [NVD.DE](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/NVD.DE.md) ## Related News & Research - [Warren Buffett's Successor, Greg Abel, Has 34.7% of Berkshire Hathaway's Portfolio Invested in These 2 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stocks](https://longbridge.com/en/news/296274565.md) - [GOOGL Stock Alert: Google Unleashes Its Biggest Weapon Against Apple](https://longbridge.com/en/news/295964022.md) - [Google Lost About $186 Billion After 4 of Its Top AI Researchers Left, but Sundar Pichai Says Google Will Be ‘A Founding Investor’ Anyway](https://longbridge.com/en/news/296636401.md) - [Google gives publishers a new way to fight AI-driven traffic losses](https://longbridge.com/en/news/296528419.md) - [India Orders Google to Shut Down Hundreds of Firebase Accounts After Bank Scam Wave: Report](https://longbridge.com/en/news/296605708.md) --- > **Disclaimer: This article is for reference only and does not constitute any investment advice.**
