The Trump administration is currently studying various restrictions targeting Chinese artificial intelligence laboratories. The signatories include Meta Platforms, NVIDIA, Microsoft, venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, as well as AI startups Reflection and Hugging Face. The letter argues that open-source AI models can promote healthy competition in the industry and allow more entities to participate in the distribution of AI industry dividends. Google, Amazon, OpenAI, and Anthropic did not participate in the signing. The open letter does not directly mention China but calls for support for the open-source development path from a broader perspective. Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, expressed his views for the first time on the X platform on Friday: "Open-source models can enhance security levels, strengthen network protection, accelerate innovation iteration and technology dissemination, and help countries achieve technological independence. The world needs both top-tier closed-source models and top-tier open-source models." The future of the open-source AI industry is filled with uncertainty. Last week, Chinese AI company Moonshot released the Kimi K3 large model, raising concerns in the U.S. that Chinese large models may soon impact the leading products of OpenAI and Anthropic.
