The group has said it is joining the Vietnam International Sourcing 2026 conference in September in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). There it will be looking to expand its buying across clothes, footwear, home goods, furniture, processed foods and higher-value products.
Looking for Quality
"The key shift is quality. Walmart is not only looking for low-cost manufacturing. They need suppliers that can meet stricter standards around consistency, traceability, sustainability, product quality and delivery reliability," the company said in a LinkedIn post.
Although other companies have started hiking supplies from Vietnam as a result of increased Trump tariffs on China and concerns over the reliability of the supply, Walmart opened a sourcing office in HCMC in 2013, and has previously called Vietnam one of its most important sourcing markets in Southeast Asia.
In the first 6 months of 2026, Vietnam exported $86.5 billion of goods to the U.S., keeping America as Vietnam's largest export market.
"For Vietnamese suppliers, Walmart's return creates a bigger opening into one of the world's most powerful retail systems," Walmart said. "For US brands, the signal is just as important. Vietnam is becoming a more legitimate market to source from, sell into, and build around. When the world's biggest retailer keeps coming back, Vietnam is no longer just a "potential market". It is becoming part of the global retail map."
The event, jointly organized by Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ho Chi Minh City administration, is meant to connect international buyers with Vietnamese suppliers and help develop the country's supply chain.
Vietnam in Demand
As part of its global sourcing diversification strategy, Walmart plans to supply the Vietnamese products through its network of more than 10,900 stores and clubs across 19 countries, serving approximately 280 million customers and members each week through physical stores and e-commerce platforms.
But businesses hoping to join Walmart's supply chain must demonstrate stable production capacity, consistent product quality, competitive pricing, and the ability to fulfill large-volume orders.
Last year, WMT said it was allowing its marketplace sellers to ship directly from Vietnam to the U.S. The U.S. retail giant said it was extending its cross-border ocean freight service beyond China by opening two Vietnamese ports to its marketplace sellers looking to ship full-container loads.
