First Western Financial’s latest earnings call painted a broadly upbeat picture, with management highlighting sharp gains in profitability, expanding margins and healthy balance sheet growth. Executives acknowledged some pressure from higher expenses and softer mortgage-related fees, but framed these as manageable trade-offs as the bank pushes to capitalize on market disruption and deepen client relationships.

## Significant Profitability Improvement

First Western reported net income of $6.7 million for the quarter, more than doubling year over year as diluted EPS climbed 119% to $0.57. Management emphasized that this jump in earnings reflects both stronger core banking performance and the benefits of prior strategic investments beginning to scale.

## Net Interest Income and Margin Expansion

Net interest income rose 21.7% from a year ago and 4.3% from the prior quarter, underscoring a healthier spread business. Net interest margin improved to 2.9%, up 23 basis points year over year and 9 basis points sequentially, helped by lower funding costs and a tilt toward higher-yielding loans.

## Balance Sheet Growth — Loans and Deposits

Total loans grew 7% from a year earlier, with loans held for investment up $23 million sequentially and new loan production reaching $115 million in the quarter. Deposits climbed 12.6% year over year, and average noninterest-bearing balances rose $18 million, supporting funding stability and future earning asset growth.

## Wealth/Trust Momentum and AUM Growth

Assets under management increased by $41 million, with investment agency AUM up $91 million sequentially and $122 million year over year, signaling sustained client inflows. Trust and investment management fees advanced 5.1%, keeping First Western in the top tier of peers for the share of revenue sourced from wealth management.

## Improving Revenue Performance

Gross revenue advanced 16% year over year and 1.8% from the prior quarter, benefiting from the lift in net interest income and higher average interest-earning assets. Management underscored that this revenue traction is critical to offsetting investment in people and technology and to improving overall operating leverage.

## Strong Asset Quality and Credit Trends

The bank recorded no loan charge-offs for a second straight quarter, and nonperforming assets and nonaccrual loans were described as flat to slightly better. With an allowance equal to 75 basis points of total loans and a modest $0.5 million provision release, management portrayed credit risk as well controlled despite growth.

## Tangible Book Value Growth and Strategic Hiring

Tangible book value per share increased 2.6% to $25.53, giving shareholders a tangible capital lift alongside earnings growth. The bank also stepped up hiring, adding front-office, product and sales talent and rolling out onboarding programs aimed at accelerating revenue contribution from these new producers.

## Decline in Noninterest Income

Noninterest income slipped by $0.3 million sequentially, driven mainly by lower gains on the sale of mortgage loans amid higher mortgage rates and softer originations. Risk management and insurance fees also eased, highlighting some sensitivity in fee streams tied to rate and market conditions.

## Rising Noninterest Expense and One-Time Charge

Noninterest expense increased by $1.0 million from the prior quarter as technology, data processing and marketing outlays climbed with the growth agenda. The period also included a $0.4 million nonrecurring write-off of capitalized technology assets, which trimmed diluted EPS by roughly $0.03.

## Efficiency Ratio Deterioration

The efficiency ratio worsened sequentially to 74.03% from 73.11%, reflecting the near-term cost uptick and the lag before new hires fully ramp. Even so, efficiency remained better than the 78.83% posted a year earlier, suggesting some early progress toward longer-term productivity gains.

## Higher Deposit Acquisition Costs and Competitive Funding

Management acknowledged that disruption and heavy competition in local markets have driven up the cost of acquiring deposits, with spot deposit costs at 2.8%. The time deposit book carried a 3.64% spot rate, limiting further repricing benefits and underscoring the importance of growing lower-cost relationship balances.

## Trade-off Between Margin and Growth

Executives described a deliberate balancing act between protecting recently expanded margins and pursuing faster balance sheet growth in a disrupted market. Competitive loan pricing is pressuring yields, and management indicated it will remain disciplined on underwriting and pricing even if that tempers near-term loan volume.

## Near-Term Expense Guidance Raised

The company raised its quarterly noninterest expense outlook to a range of $20 million to $21 million to account for ongoing hiring and activation efforts. Management framed these higher costs as investments that must be matched by revenue growth and operating leverage, reinforcing their focus on profitable rather than purely volumetric expansion.

## Forward-Looking Guidance and Outlook

Looking ahead to the second half of 2026, First Western expects further improvement driven by balance sheet growth, continued net interest margin expansion and higher fee income. Management reiterated its expense guidance and signaled a willingness to keep investing in banking, trust and investment talent when market disruption presents attractive opportunities.

First Western’s call highlighted a franchise leaning into growth while keeping a close eye on credit and cost discipline. Investors heard a story of improving profitability, stronger margins and rising wealth revenues, tempered by near-term efficiency pressure and funding competition, with management betting that today’s investments will translate into stronger earnings power over time.
