The report indicates that discussions about terminating the partnership with Uber have already taken place internally at Waymo since the two companies announced their collaboration in 2023. It has been reported that conflicts between the two parties regarding operational and commercial matters have been increasing in recent years. Waymo has raised concerns about the cleanliness of its vehicles on the Uber platform and route planning. Meanwhile, Uber has criticized Waymo's vehicles for suddenly becoming unusable in adverse weather conditions and believes that the partnership has "unsustainable financial terms." The report states that Waymo has informed Uber that the company plans to independently enter the relevant market after the contract allows for it in January 2028. Notably, at the end of June, Waymo and Uber ended their autonomous driving service partnership in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Phoenix is the market where Waymo first offered Robotaxi services to paying passengers through its own ride-hailing app in 2020. In 2023, Waymo signed a multi-year cooperation agreement with Uber and began providing part of the Waymo Robotaxi fleet services in the Uber app later that year. According to the cooperation arrangement, Waymo vehicles were used not only for Robotaxi passenger services but also for on-demand food delivery. An Uber spokesperson stated at the time that the Phoenix project "was intentionally a pilot deployment with just over 12 vehicles specifically for the project." The company indicated that it would announce a new project in Phoenix in collaboration with another autonomous vehicle supplier in the future, but did not disclose further details. According to Waymo, the Robotaxi cooperation in Phoenix ended in May after the two parties completed hundreds of thousands of ride services.
