# Has the Nasdaq Sell-Off Gone Too Far? Technical and Seasonal Factors Suggest a Rebound Window Is Opening

The recent sustained decline in the NASDAQ-100 Index (NDX) has led investors to broadly adopt a defensive stance. However, multiple technical indicators, positioning data, and seasonal patterns are simultaneously signaling a potential reversal. Oversold technical formations, elevated demand for downside hedging, the unwinding of hedge fund positions, and the extreme relative weakness of hyperscalers have collectively pushed the NDX into a potential short-term window for a short squeeze.

Last Friday, NDX futures briefly broke below their range low before quickly recovering, with the RSI indicator approaching oversold territory. **Futures prices also neared a test of the 100-day moving average.** Meanwhile, signs of easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East emerged, with this marginal improvement in macro variables providing additional support for a technical rebound.

Notably, **over the past 10 trading days, the option skew has risen significantly, indicating that investors are heavily buying downside protection.** Once the market stabilizes and rebounds, the closing of these hedged positions will create momentum in the same direction. Historically, the local market low in early June coincided precisely with the peak and subsequent decline of the SDEX index, suggesting that extreme panic sentiment itself can serve as a contra-indicator.

## Futures Hold Key Technical Support as RSI Approaches Oversold Levels

The movement of NDX futures last Friday was technically significant. After briefly breaking below the range low during the session, prices immediately recovered that level, forming a typical false breakout pattern.

**The RSI indicator has continued to decline, approaching the traditionally defined oversold zone, while futures prices have nearly touched the 100-day moving average—a level that has historically provided effective support on multiple occasions.**

Overall, the current technical structure provides a relatively clear foundation for a short-term rebound. If tensions in the Middle East cool further, the conditions for triggering a short squeeze are essentially in place.

## Hedging Signals: Extreme Skew Is Often a Contra-Indicator

The pricing structure in the options market is also worth noting. Over the past 10 trading days, the Skew indicator has risen sharply, reflecting a surge in investor demand for protection against downside risk. This concentrated buying of protection has historically often occurred when market panic reached a 阶段性 peak.

According to Goldman Sachs data, the market low in early June this year almost synchronized with the 阶段性 high of the SDEX index. Subsequently, the Skew fell, and the market rebounded. From a technical perspective, the current rise in Skew levels has similar contra-indicator reference value—once the market begins to repair, the unwinding of large protective positions will further amplify upward momentum.

## Hedge Funds Have Significantly Reduced Tech Holdings

Changes at the positioning level are equally 不可忽视. According to Goldman Sachs data, hedge funds have recently sold off tech stocks in large volumes, significantly compressing overall tech exposure since early June.

This means that current market holdings in tech stocks are in a relatively "clean" state—previous long positions have been thoroughly cleared. Historical experience suggests that significant compression in positioning often reduces the momentum for further declines while also creating room for capital to re-enter the market later.

## Hyperscalers: Extreme Weakness May Breed Reversal Opportunities

The performance of hyperscalers relative to the broader NDX has fallen to extreme levels. According to Goldman Sachs data, the magnitude of this relative weakness is extremely rare in historical terms. It is precisely this extreme deviation that has begun to attract the attention of some contrarian investors.

When the relative performance of a sector deviates from historical norms to such an extent, the force of mean reversion often comes into play at some point. The extreme weakness of hyperscalers is not only a major source of current pressure on the NDX but may also become an important driver of future rebounds.

## Oil Price Linkage: Easing Middle East Tensions Could Provide Additional Catalyst for Nasdaq

From a fundamental perspective, there is no direct correlation between the NDX and crude oil prices. However, since the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, the two have exhibited a rare tight inverse correlation. According to LSEG Workspace data, every fluctuation in oil prices has formed a near-mirror correspondence with NDX trends.

This relationship implies that if crude oil prices continue their downward trend, it will provide additional upside potential for the Nasdaq. Therefore, the marginal easing of Middle East tensions is not just a geopolitical variable but directly impacts the current technical trajectory of the market.

## Seasonal Patterns: Historical Data Shows a Bullish Bias at Current Timing

Seasonal factors are also aligned with the bulls. According to Equity Clock data, historical patterns suggest that the NDX tends to strengthen after the current time node, with July frequently witnessing short squeeze rallies.

**Seasonal patterns are not the decisive factor in market trends, but against the backdrop where technicals, positioning, and sentiment all point in the same direction, the supportive significance of this historical pattern is further enhanced.**

Oversold technical formations, elevated downside hedging, cleared tech positions, extreme weakness in hyperscalers, and favorable seasonal patterns—all these signals point in the same direction. While these factors do not guarantee a rebound, after the recent sustained decline, the threshold of conditions required to trigger a positive surprise has significantly lowered compared to a few weeks ago. For investors focusing on short-term opportunities, the risk-reward ratio is quietly shifting.
