# Top 20 trading volumes in US stocks on July 28: Chip stocks generally declined, SK Hynix fell below issue price

On Monday, Micron Technology, the top stock by trading volume in the U.S. market, closed down 2.25%, with a trading volume of $41.773 billion. Legendary investor Michael Burry, known for the movie "The Big Short," has once again taken action, further expanding his short bets on the semiconductor sector while maintaining his short positions on Tesla and Palantir.

Burry disclosed his latest holdings on Substack on July 25. He shorted Micron Technology further at a price of $933.86 per share and increased his short position in NVIDIA at $210.28. Additionally, he added to his short position in the Philadelphia Semiconductor ETF at $535.83, stating that this position, combined with the put options he holds, has formed a "large position" in his portfolio.

NVIDIA, the second-ranked stock, closed down 4.99%, with a trading volume of $30.409 billion. Legendary investor Michael Burry has further expanded his short bets on the semiconductor sector, as disclosed in his Substack post on July 25, which includes increasing his short position in NVIDIA at $210.28. Regarding his logic for shorting NVIDIA, Burry stated that the current high demand is not driven by real end customers, and the related financing arrangements are off-balance sheet and undisclosed, with future revenues "largely financed through circular arrangements."

The third-ranked stock, Sandisk, closed down 11.02%, with a trading volume of $27.071 billion. The storage sector in the U.S. market generally declined on Monday.

AMD, ranked fifth, closed down 5.17%, with a trading volume of $15.555 billion. Wedbush Securities released a research report on Monday, maintaining an "outperform" rating on AMD and significantly raising its target price, citing strong growth momentum in its data center business in the CPU and GPU sectors, as well as demand boosts from newly established AI partnerships.

Wedbush expects AMD's data center revenue to accelerate growth in the second half of 2026 to 2027. This expectation aligns with signals recently released by AMD CEO Lisa Su, who previously stated that based on strong demand for the "Helios" platform and MI450 series GPUs, the company is confident in achieving annual revenue of several billion dollars in its data center AI business by 2027.

Additionally, Mizuho Securities raised AMD's target stock price from $615 to $625 on Monday.

Google Class A shares (GOOGL), ranked ninth, closed up 2.13%, with a trading volume of $9.136 billion. Reports indicate that the White House's Office of the National Cyber Director distributed a draft framework to OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google about two weeks ago, and the three companies jointly submitted modification suggestions. President Trump signed an executive order related to AI in early June, requiring the completion of this regulatory framework by August 1.

The framework aims to establish standardized processes to control the new generation of high-computing AI models capable of rapidly exploiting network vulnerabilities SK Hynix, ranked 11th, fell 7.47%, with a trading volume of $7.227 billion. Against the backdrop of a collective sell-off in the chip sector, the stock closed at $143.02 on Monday, marking its lowest closing price since its listing and falling below the IPO issuance price for the first time.

Although the market generally has a positive outlook on AI development, investors are still selling off semiconductor stocks that had previously surged. Even with NVIDIA and SK Hynix announcing plans to build an AI data center in South Korea with a total installed capacity of over 2 gigawatts, the stock price continued to decline.

ASML, ranked 17th, fell 5.80%, with a trading volume of $5.512 billion. ASML's stock price dropped as much as 6.4% during the day, hitting an intraday low. Analysts say that market concerns about ASML's growth prospects in 2026 are the main reason for the short-term fluctuations in its stock price.

Palantir, ranked 18th, rose 7%, with a trading volume of $4.731 billion. Citigroup analyst Tyler Radke remains optimistic about Palantir, reiterating a "buy" rating, but simultaneously lowering the target price from $225 to $200. The bank stated that the reduction in target price is not due to pessimism. The analyst significantly raised the earnings expectations for Palantir for the fiscal year 2027, predicting a revenue growth of 53% year-on-year, far exceeding Wall Street's consensus of about 45%.

Market participants say that this "lower target, higher expectations" contradictory action by Citigroup analysts reflects the unique dilemma Palantir currently faces: while the fundamentals continue to accelerate, the valuation is still digesting past bubbles. Palantir will announce its latest quarterly results after the U.S. stock market closes on August 3.
