Amkor Technology’s latest earnings call struck an upbeat tone, highlighting record revenue, broad-based demand, and expanding margins, even as management acknowledged pockets of weakness in communications and near-term disruption from factory transitions. Executives stressed that stronger computing and automotive trends, plus new strategic partnerships and ample liquidity, outweigh short-term headwinds tied to Android softness and capacity moves.

## Record Revenue and Strong Top-Line Growth

Amkor reported second-quarter revenue of $1.9 billion, a 26% year-on-year increase that also lifted first-half sales by the same percentage. The company achieved record quarterly revenue in both computing and automotive and industrial, underscoring how diversified demand is powering the top line.

## Broad-Based End-Market Strength

Growth was broad across all end markets, with computing revenue up 20% sequentially in the second quarter and expected to rise about 30% in the third quarter. Automotive and industrial climbed 17% sequentially, while communications and consumer posted sequential gains of 6% and 15%, respectively, reinforcing the breadth of the upturn.

## Margin and Profitability Expansion

Profitability advanced sharply as gross margin reached 16.8%, expanding more than 250 basis points from the prior quarter and lifting gross profit to $319 million, up 33%. Operating income of $200 million translated to a 10.5% margin, while EBITDA reached $400 million for a 21% margin, reflecting strong operating leverage.

## Earnings Per Share and Net Income Improvement

Net income rose to $174 million, driving earnings per share to $0.70 in the second quarter. For the first half, operating income more than doubled and EPS more than tripled versus the same period in the prior year, highlighting the combined impact of higher volumes and improved margins.

## Improved Factory Utilization and Capacity Loading

Factory utilization improved significantly, rising from the 50% range into the 70% range across the manufacturing footprint. Several advanced technology platforms are already running at full capacity, which is providing meaningful fixed-cost leverage and supporting the margin expansion seen in recent quarters.

## Strategic Partnerships with TSMC and NVIDIA

The company announced a 10-year advanced packaging agreement with TSMC and a multi-year collaboration with NVIDIA aimed at next-generation AI infrastructure. Management framed these deals as critical for technology leadership, capacity alignment, and strengthening the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, with benefits expected over a multi-year horizon.

## Strong Liquidity and Financing to Support Growth

To support its growth plans, Amkor issued $1.15 billion of zero-coupon convertible debt, bolstering financial flexibility. The balance sheet now holds $2.5 billion in cash and short-term investments and $3.6 billion of total liquidity against $2.5 billion of total debt, implying a debt-to-EBITDA ratio of roughly 1.8 times.

## Healthy Near-Term Outlook

Management guided to third-quarter revenue of $1.95 billion to $2.05 billion and gross margin between 18.5% and 19.5%, with EPS projected in the $0.72 to $0.82 range. Capital spending for 2026 is expected at $2.5 billion to $3.0 billion, with about two-thirds to seventy percent targeting facilities expansion and the balance directed to advanced packaging, test, and development.

## Communications Weakness and Android Decline

Despite a 6% sequential increase in overall communications revenue during the second quarter, the Android segment fell 20% due to memory supply constraints. Amkor expects communications revenue to decline by a high-single-digit percentage sequentially in the third quarter, breaking its usual seasonal pattern and weighing on overall growth.

## SiP Migration Timing Headwind

A strategic relocation of system-in-package capacity from Korea to Vietnam is introducing timing-related disruption across customer programs. Management cautioned that this transition will not be confined to a single quarter and could extend into the fourth quarter and the first half of next year as customer qualifications and migrations are completed.

## Memory Supply Constraints and Build-Pattern Changes

Ongoing memory supply issues are affecting customer build patterns, especially for Android-related products and broader communications demand. These dynamics are muting the typical second-half seasonal uplift, leading to a softer outlook for certain segments even as other markets continue to expand.

## Near-Term Underutilization from Asset Moves

The process of crating, shipping, installing, and re-qualifying equipment during site transfers is creating periods where assets are effectively idle. This “assets in flight” phenomenon is temporarily depressing utilization and adding short-term inefficiencies, though management emphasized that these impacts are transitional.

## Future U.S. Manufacturing Cost and Ramp Risk

Amkor flagged that Phase 1 of its Arizona project and other U.S. capacity additions will carry underutilization costs during early ramp stages. These higher U.S. manufacturing expenses are expected to act as a margin headwind in future years until volumes scale, affecting the cadence of profitability even as they strengthen long-term positioning.

## One-Time Benefits in Q2 Results

Second-quarter results were boosted by certain non-recurring items, including $14 million of net discrete tax benefits and a $21 million gain from the sale of real estate recorded in operating expenses. Management noted that these items may not repeat, implying that underlying performance should be considered alongside these temporary tailwinds.

## Forward-Looking Guidance and Outlook

Looking ahead, Amkor’s guidance is built on continued strength in computing, with expected sequential growth of about 30% in the third quarter and mid-single-digit growth in automotive and industrial and mid-teens growth in consumer. While communications is forecast to decline by a high-single-digit percentage due to SiP migration and memory issues, the company plans significant capital investment, backed by solid liquidity and strategic partnerships, to support capacity expansion and long-term AI-driven demand.

Amkor’s earnings call painted a picture of a company in the midst of robust growth, with record revenues, improving margins, and key alliances reinforcing its role in advanced packaging and AI infrastructure. Short-term headwinds in communications, transitional underutilization, and future U.S. cost ramps were acknowledged, but management’s confidence in demand trends, balance sheet strength, and strategic positioning left an overall constructive impression for investors.
