# Investors need not panic over NVIDIA's various partnership commitments

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang

Author: Martin Pierce

The market is currently in a state of panic. On Monday, news broke that the AI chip giant had reached a $500 billion partnership with South Korea's SK Group, while media reports indicated that NVIDIA was also negotiating to assist in fundraising for the OpenAI research center, planning to build a data center park in Ohio with a total investment of $500 billion. As a result of these dual announcements, NVIDIA's stock price fell 5% in a single day. However, investors need not worry: neither of these announcements constitutes new developments, and the cooperation plans have not yet been finalized.

For example, NVIDIA and SK Group announced last Friday that they had only signed a letter of intent for cooperation. A letter of intent does not have substantive legal binding force. It is worth noting that NVIDIA signed a letter of intent with OpenAI back in September last year, claiming to have reached a "milestone strategic cooperation," but just a few months later, that cooperation plan fell through.

In addition, the official announcement from NVIDIA and SK Group last Friday essentially reiterated two other announcements made in early June. The first was that NVIDIA and SK Telecom, a subsidiary of SK Group, announced plans to build "gigawatt-level AI cloud infrastructure" in South Korea based on NVIDIA's DSX technology. Interestingly, the Friday press release included a link to the original announcement, while the latest cooperation plan aims to double the scale of the AI cloud in South Korea to 2 gigawatts. The second was that NVIDIA and SK Hynix, another subsidiary of SK Group, announced a partnership for storage chips. As for the details of the $500 billion investment allocation and the funding ratios, NVIDIA has remained tight-lipped. My colleague Liu Fei reported on Friday that company executives avoided all related details during the press conference.

The Wall Street Journal's report on NVIDIA and OpenAI, which sparked market discussions on Monday, is also not new; as early as June, the tech media outlet The Information had disclosed related negotiations, and to this day, the specific terms remain vague. The report mentioned that if NVIDIA were to get involved, it would bear a significant amount of risk for OpenAI. However, considering the past cooperation experiences of the two companies, there is no guarantee that this deal will ultimately materialize.

NVIDIA has a history of frequently announcing various cooperation news. Today, two more announcements were added: the company will invest in the AI startup Safe Superintelligence founded by Ilya Sutskever, and it will lead the establishment of an open-source software cybersecurity alliance. Given the difficulty of identifying truly valuable new developments in the AI field, the media's repeated coverage of different versions of the same event has further muddied the waters. Before investors panic due to NVIDIA's various funding commitments, it is essential to clarify which are genuine new developments and which are merely old news being revisited **Amazon's Layout in Satellite Mobile Communication Business**

If only Amazon hadn't halted the Fire Phone project back in the day! The e-commerce and cloud computing giant has taken a key step towards launching its self-developed satellite direct-to-phone communication service: on Monday, Amazon submitted an application to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch 5,105 satellites, implementing the previously announced satellite direct-to-terminal mobile communication service.

In April of this year, Amazon finalized the acquisition of Globalstar, revealing its intention to create this service, which will directly compete with similar products from SpaceX. Globalstar currently operates several satellite mobile communication services, with the emergency satellite connectivity feature of the Apple iPhone relying on its network. Amazon's new communication service will also be built on its low Earth orbit (LEO) broadband satellite project, which has yet to be launched, and this broadband service is positioned to compete with SpaceX's Starlink.

Of course, Amazon does not position this mobile communication business as a competitor to traditional operators like Verizon and T-Mobile. On the same day, Amazon stated that the new service aims to "supplement existing terrestrial mobile networks and fill signal coverage gaps," with a strategy similar to that of SpaceX. The future market size of this business is still difficult to estimate, but it can be confirmed that once both Amazon and SpaceX enter the market, it will be challenging for either to achieve high profits from this business
