description: "Elon Musk is leveraging X Money's premium-only rollout to boost X Premium subscriptions, mirroring Amazon Prime's strategy. By offering financial perks like P2P payments and debit cards exclusively to subscribers, the goal is to increase retention and recurring revenue rather than compete directly in the crowded payments market. This approach aims to make the subscription stickier by integrating financial services into the X ecosystem."

# Is Elon Musk Borrowing Amazon Prime's Playbook for X Money?

Everyone sees **X Money** as **Elon Musk**‘s latest attempt to take on **PayPal Holdings, Inc** (NASDAQ:PYPL)-owned **Venmo**, **Apple Inc**‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Apple Pay and **Robinhood Markets, Inc.** (NASDAQ:HOOD). But investors may be asking the wrong question.

The more interesting strategy isn’t payments—it’s subscriptions. By making X Money available first to Premium and Premium+ subscribers, Musk appears to be using financial services as a reason to pay for X, much like **Amazon.com, Inc.** (NASDAQ:AMZN) turned free shipping into the cornerstone of Prime before layering on streaming, music and other benefits.

The strategy also takes on added significance because X is now part of **Space Exploration Technologies Corp.** (NASDAQ:SPCX). If X Money succeeds, the payments business could become another consumer-facing asset within the SpaceX ecosystem, complementing services like **Starlink** while increasing customer retention across Musk’s portfolio.

## X Money Could Make X Premium Harder To Leave

Amazon didn’t build Prime around video. It built Prime around free shipping, then kept adding services until the subscription became difficult to cancel. Prime Video, Music and Photos weren’t standalone products—they increased the value of staying inside Amazon’s ecosystem.

X Money could serve a similar purpose.

Rather than relying solely on features like verification, fewer ads or **Grok AI** access, X is adding a financial layer that could make Premium memberships more valuable. The rollout includes peer-to-peer payments, a **Visa Inc.** (NYSE:V) debit card, direct deposit, Apple Wallet support and promotional savings yields—all benefits that encourage users to keep their subscription active instead of viewing it as an optional expense.

For X, that could mean higher subscriber retention and more predictable recurring revenue, two metrics investors often reward.

## Payments May Be The Hook, Not The Business

The payments market is already crowded with Venmo, Cash App, and Apple Pay. Winning purely on peer-to-peer transfers would be an uphill battle.

Instead, X Money may be functioning as an acquisition and retention tool. Every financial feature gives users another reason to remain inside the X ecosystem, increasing engagement while opening the door to future products such as lending, investing, shopping or creator monetization.

That’s a strategy investors have seen before. Amazon used logistics to strengthen subscriptions. Robinhood used its Gold membership to bundle banking, credit and investing into a single paid offering.

## Investors Should Watch Premium Growth

Whether X Money becomes a major payments platform is only part of the story.

The bigger question is whether financial services can help X Premium evolve into a stickier subscription business. If exclusive money features succeed in attracting new members and reducing cancellations, X Money’s biggest impact may not be payment volumes at all—it may be turning X Premium into the kind of ecosystem that keeps users paying month after month.
