Femsa, as the company is better known, reported a profit of 9.22 billion Mexican pesos ($528 million) for the April-June quarter, up from MXN5.59 billion in the year-earlier period. Revenue rose 9.3% to MXN231 billion, with double-digit sales growth at the Oxxo convenience store chain in Mexico which saw customer traffic increase after several quarters of decline. "While the World Cup provided a positive contribution during the quarter, we believe there was additional improvement supported by stronger execution across regions," Chief Executive Jose Antonio Fernández Garza-Laguera said. Femsa is cautiously optimistic about the second half of the year, although the consumer environment in Mexico remains soft and there won't be the tailwind of the World Cup, he added. Oxxo same-store sales rose 9.5% with a 7.4% increase in average ticket and a 2% increase in store traffic. Femsa's second-quarter operating profit rose 7.2% to MXN19.11 billion, and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose 13% to MXN33.34 billion. The Americas and Mobility division, which includes Oxxo stores outside of Mexico and service stations in Mexico and the U.S., saw revenue increase by 17.4%. Fuel sales rose 9.3% and merchandise sales grew by 56%, boosted by the consolidation of Oxxo Brazil. Revenue in Europe fell 3.8% and health division revenue edged up 2.2%. Beverages unit Coca-Cola Femsa reported 4.7% sales growth in the quarter, with strong performance in South America offsetting weakness in Mexico due to soft consumer demand and higher excise taxes on soft drinks.
