# Amazon (AMZN) Prime Video Lands Exclusive NHL Playoff Games in Canada

Tech giant Amazon (AMZN) is growing its live sports business in Canada through a new deal that will bring NHL playoff games to Prime Video. As part of the agreement with Rogers Communications (RCI), Amazon will get exclusive rights to two first-round playoff series and one second-round series every year. At the same time, Prime Video will also become the only national broadcaster of Wednesday night NHL games in Canada, taking over from the Monday night games it has shown over the past two seasons.

As a result, this deal gives Amazon its first opportunity to stream the Stanley Cup playoffs in a country where hockey is still one of the most watched sports. Even though Amazon is gaining new rights, Rogers still controls the larger Canadian NHL rights package after renewing its deal with the league for C$11 billion in April 2025. That 12-year contract is more than twice the size of its previous agreement from 2013.

However, Rogers is now choosing to license part of that package to Amazon, as more sports content continues to move away from traditional TV and toward streaming platforms. Because of this shift, the agreement will include at least 26 national regular-season games and will be shown in both English and French. Still, the companies have not said how much Amazon is paying.

## **Another Way to Attract Users**

For Amazon, this partnership is another way to attract and keep Prime subscribers. In fact, Amazon has been using this live sports approach for years. Back in 2022, Amazon spent $13 billion to secure the NFL's Thursday Night Football rights. Since then, the results have been strong, as the most recent season averaged 15.3 million viewers per game on Prime Video, which is up 16% from the year before. In addition, Amazon streamed the NBA Finals in France in June.

## **Is Amazon a Buy, Sell, or Hold?**

Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on AMZN stock based on 45 Buys and one Hold assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average AMZN price target of $318.40 per share implies 37.9% upside potential. (See AMZN Stock Forecast).
