# Taiwan Semiconductor's Japanese factory gradually resumes production after the earthquake

The chip giant is still conducting a detailed inspection of its facility located in southern Japan to assess the impact of the earthquake.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest foundry, stated that a magnitude 7 earthquake occurred in southern Japan on Tuesday, and its local facility has gradually resumed operations.

TSMC released a statement saying that the main structure of the factory building is safe, and comprehensive repairs and disaster impact assessments are still underway. It has not yet been confirmed whether the wafers and production equipment inside the facility were damaged. After the earthquake, the factory promptly evacuated all personnel, and all staff members are safe.

TSMC's Kumamoto factory is located in the southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, and is set to officially start production in 2024. The company is concurrently constructing a second new factory that utilizes advanced processes. TSMC stated that the construction site of the second factory was not damaged by the earthquake, but some construction activities have been suspended to prevent risks from aftershocks.

TSMC's establishment in Kumamoto is part of the company's strategy to diversify its supply chain, aiming to hedge against potential geopolitical risks while better meeting the needs of local customers, such as Japanese automotive companies
