# Europe’s ‘explosive demand’ for AC units continues: China’s Midea

Chinese home appliance maker Midea reported that European demand for its air conditioners continues to soar amid recurrent heatwaves, with two of its factories receiving hundreds of thousands of new orders in a month. The factories, in the eastern city of Wuhu and the southern port city Guangzhou, received new European orders for 200,000 units within a month amid “explosive demand”, the company said in a statement on Wednesday on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange’s investor Q&A platform. The company said earlier this month that since June, it had received 160,000 orders for its U-shaped PortaSplit model, a portable air conditioner that allows users to sidestep certain regulatory and structural constraints. Many cities restrict exterior-wall modifications such as drilling for external AC units under strict historic urban preservation rules. Unlike conventional split systems, the PortaSplit uses a window bracket to suspend the outdoor unit without the need for permanent installation. To meet surging demand, Midea opened a new production line at its Wuhu factory on July 7, manufactured 20,000 units in just three and a half days and started the first shipment to France within seven days, the Foshan, Guangdong-headquartered company said earlier this month. Historic heatwaves have gripped Europe since late May, sending residents scrambling for fans and air conditioners. Chinese firms have moved quickly to fill the void. China’s exports of air conditioners to Europe in the first half of the year jumped 43.2 per cent year on year to a record US$3.76 billion, according to a People’s Daily report earlier this month citing Chinese customs data. Midea’s PortaSplit has been among the most popular models, having consistently sold out across multiple e-commerce platforms. Priced at around €900 (US$1,024) last year, the units have reportedly sold on secondary markets for thousands of euros, with the official retail price having since risen to €1,199 earlier this month. Midea said earlier this month that air conditioner exports to Europe traditionally relied on maritime transport, taking about two months to reach France from Wuhu. To speed up delivery for the emergency orders from France this year, it for the first time adopted a cross-border land transport route by truck, cutting delivery time in half, the company said.
