description: "Chinese inverter stocks dropped after the US FCC banned imports of advanced robots and connected power inverters from countries posing national security risks. Sungrow Power Supply fell 1.4% as it derives 15-20% of revenue from the US market, where high-margin energy storage inverters are key. The ban targets new models lacking Conditional Approval. Sungrow claims its products meet US standards and is expanding overseas production in Thailand and Poland to mitigate risks."

# US Bans Imports of Inverters, Advanced Robots; Chinese Mainland Stocks Drop

(Yicai) July 30 -- Shares of listed Chinese makers of inverters declined after the United States Federal Communications Commission issued a ban on imported advanced humanoid and quadruped robots and connected power inverters.

Sungrow Power Supply \[SHE: 300274\] was trading down 1.4 percent at CNY104.97 (USD15.51) as of 2 p.m. today, after dropping 4.9 percent yesterday. GoodWe Technologies \[SHA: 688390\] fell 1.5 percent yesterday and 4.6 percent to CNY60.90 (USD9) as of 2 p.m. today.

On July 28, the FCC updated its Covered List to include advanced robotic devices and connected power inverters produced in foreign countries that were not granted Conditional Approval by the Department of War or Department of Homeland Security for allegedly “posing unacceptable risks to the national security of the US or the safety and security of US persons.” The ban only applies to new models.

This follows reports on June 30 that the Trump administration was drafting an important ban on Chinese inverters, which caused Sungrow’s stock to plunge nearly 14 percent the following day.

“The inverters the company exports to the US do not have functions of remote upgrade and remote communication and meet US standards,” Sungrow’s Chairman Cao Renxian told investors on July 15. “The US Department of Energy tested Chinese inverters early this year and did not find any maliciously implanted wireless communication functions.”

Sungrow has been advancing its globalization strategy in recent years. Its Thai factory is already operational, and the one under construction in Poland is expected to begin output of inverters and energy storage products in the first half of next year, aiming to meet Europe’s localization needs and enhance customer confidence, according to Cao.

“We will build overseas production capacity based on global operations and the goal of being closer to customers,” Cao noted.

Sungrow’s revenue from the US market accounts for 15 percent to 20 percent of its total revenue, the company said last October. Energy storage inverters in North America have high gross profit margins, which is why Sungrow’s stock was hit the hardest by the ban.

China’s inverter exports surged 34 percent to USD1.2 billion in June from a year earlier, bringing the total for the first half of the year to USD5.5 billion, up 30 percent from the same period last year, according to data from the General Administration of Customs.

About 90 percent of inverters used in US public utility photovoltaic projects were imported from overseas last year, with the majority of them being made in China, according to the latest report by global research and consultancy group Wood Mackenzie.
