# Xiaomi Enters the Extended-Range Large SUV Market: SkyNomad Pricing Reflects "Volume Ambition," Wall Street Closely Watches Sales and Gross Margin

Xiaomi has just dropped a bombshell on China's new energy vehicle market.

On July 30, 2026, Xiaomi held its second Automotive Technology Day in Beijing, officially launching the new "Kunlun" technical architecture and the "SkyNomad (Pengcheng)" extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) SUV series. This marks a strategic leap from sports-oriented battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to the family-oriented, large-space EREV market. The pre-sale prices for the flagship seven-seater N90 Max and the large five-seater N70 Max are set at RMB 299,900 and RMB 259,900, respectively.

According to Zhuifeng Trading Desk, Wall Street investment banks Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Nomura, and Citigroup quickly reached a consensus: **This is an extremely aggressive "price-for-volume" strategy aimed at hitting the massive annual sales target of 550,000 units in 2026.** Morgan Stanley and Deutsche Bank view this as a strong sales catalyst; however, Citigroup and Nomura have issued clear warning signals to investors—under the extreme hardware specifications, **Xiaomi's gross profit margin faces significant uncertainty, and the N70 series is highly prone to internal cannibalization with its own YU7 model.**

Analysts point out that this means the core battleground has shifted from "Can Xiaomi build good cars?" to **"Can Xiaomi successfully absorb massive production capacity and orders while defending its gross profit margin?"**

## Aggressive Pricing Reshapes Industry Benchmarks, Targeting 550,000 Annual Units

Xiaomi's pricing strategy this time completely broke Wall Street's expectation models.

Nomura noted that the market previously expected the N90 series to be priced in the RMB 300,000–350,000 range and the N70 series in the RMB 250,000–300,000 range. However, the actual pre-sale prices of RMB 299,900 for the N90 Max and RMB 259,900 for the N70 Max are at the lower end of or even below expectations, **reflecting a clear intent to "trade price for volume."**

Morgan Stanley further predicts that with the official launch in September, the upcoming "Standard" and "Pro" versions will further lower the entry barrier, **with the N70 series dipping into the RMB 200,000–250,000 range and the N90 series covering the RMB 250,000–300,000 range.**

Citigroup's competitive comparison shows that the N90 Max's pricing is roughly on par with the ONVO L90 Pro (starting at RMB 265,800) but significantly lower than the Li Auto L9 (starting at RMB 509,800), AITO M9 (starting at RMB 479,800), and Zeekr 9X (over RMB 450,000), potentially reshaping the price-to-feature benchmark for large family SUVs.

Deutsche Bank believes that the SkyNomad series will directly compete with mid-range brand SUVs such as BYD, Leapmotor, XPeng, Geely, Lynk & Co, Chery, and Volkswagen, while also posing a potential threat to high-end brands like Li Auto, Tesla, Zeekr, and AITO.

The bank pinpointed the logic behind this aggressive pricing: **Xiaomi's extreme desire for sales volume.** Data shows that Xiaomi delivered only 180,055 vehicles in the first half of the year, accounting for just 34% of its annual target of 550,000 units.

This means that in the second half of the year, Xiaomi needs to sell an average of 61,000 units per month to meet its target. According to Thinkercar data, Xiaomi's new orders remained sluggish in July, with weekly figures of only 5,400, 5,600, 7,400, and 5,700 units, respectively. **The launch of SkyNomad is seen as a key catalyst to boost orders.**

## Maximum Hardware Spec: The Ledger of Large Batteries and the "Kunlun" Architecture

In terms of product strength, Xiaomi attempts to redefine the space and configuration standards for family SUVs through the "Kunlun" architecture.

Research reports from Citigroup and Deutsche Bank detailed the breakdown of this high-spec hardware ledger:

- **N90 Max (Seven-Seater):** Vehicle length 5,285mm, wheelbase 3,080mm. Equipped with a 76kWh large-capacity ternary lithium battery, offering a CLTC pure-electric range of up to 464km and a combined range of 1,705km. It features a 310kW dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The interior offers a 2.9-meter flat floor and 4.4 square meters of usable area, with the trunk expandable to a maximum of 1,831 liters.

- **N70 Max (Five-Seater):** Vehicle length 4,960mm, wheelbase 2,950mm. Also equipped with a 76kWh battery, achieving a class-leading CLTC pure-electric range of 505km and a combined range of 1,461km, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.5 seconds.

Additionally, both Max models come standard with air suspension, CDC dampers, LiDAR, and the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor intelligent driving chip with computing power of up to 700 TOPS.

Deutsche Bank keenly captured clues regarding Xiaomi's cost control: **To support such aggressive pricing, Xiaomi introduced more cost-effective battery suppliers—Sunwoda and CALB—for the SkyNomad series, rather than using CATL and BYD, which supply its pure electric models.**

## Wall Street's Concerns: Gross Margin Uncertainty and Internal "Cannibalization"

Despite the attractive products, Wall Street analysts have not been swept away by fervent emotion; they have outlined clear risk priorities for investors.

First is the **concern over gross profit margins**.

Citigroup explicitly warned in its report that there is a core contradiction in the investment logic for the SkyNomad series: the large battery (76kWh), dual motors, range extender, air suspension, LiDAR, and complex multi-mode seat systems imply extremely high bill of materials (BOM) costs, while the aggressive pricing strategy directly suppresses gross profit margins.

Citigroup listed four key indicators that investors need to track closely:

> 1. **Final Official Pricing** (Whether further adjustments are made upon the September release)
>
> 2. **Order Conversion Rate** (The proportion of reservations converted into actual purchases)
>
> 3. **Production Ramp-up Speed** (Whether volume can be increased rapidly)
>
> 4. **Model Gross Profit Margin** (Whether reasonable profits can be maintained under a low-price strategy)
>

Second is the **realistic challenge of sales targets and product cannibalization**.

Nomura Securities did the math: Assuming the sales of the existing SU7 and YU7 remain stable (with historical average monthly sales of 10,500 and 25,000 units, respectively), the SkyNomad series needs to deliver approximately 156,500 units from September to December (i.e., about 39,100 units per month) to help the company achieve its annual target. This ramp-up speed appears overly aggressive.

> More seriously, the N70 Max highly overlaps with Xiaomi's own pure electric SUV YU7 (4,999mm/3,000mm) in terms of dimensions (4,960mm/2,950mm) and five-seat layout, and their price ranges directly collide (YU7 Standard Edition at RMB 233,500, Pro Edition at RMB 279,900).

Nomura predicts that **the N70 series will inevitably cannibalize some of the potential sales of the YU7.**

Morgan Stanley remains relatively optimistic, believing that SkyNomad, with its innovative design and highly attractive pricing, is poised for strong sales performance, viewing it as a positive catalyst for the stock price.
